Laura and I took the bus us around this area last weekend and... LOTS of snow! The roads had just opened up, and most were passable. Its the most snow I've seen up there at this time in June in 10 years.
Here's the spot where we camp up at Elwood Pass (11K feet elevation). You can see the huge snow drift blocking it.
This if on the back side of the Elwood flats, where the 4x4 road down the pass comes in.
And these last ones are about 100 yards away from the turn off to the spur road the goes up Grayback Mtn. That spur road still had drifts across it, so no drive to the top on this trip. This is @ just shy of 12K feet elevation.

Thanks for sharing the photos. Sorry I missed out again this year. Should be good for another trip in a few weeks.
Sorry to hear about the smoke bothering Manfred. That was a huge fire up there. We had our own small one that kept me indoors a few days.
Finally making some of my own headway on the Syncro. Have a few more parts to order but going to wait until I get the flywheel off tomorrow.
How about a cooler weather trip like in 2012, September or next year in the Spring? |
Hey Brian. Glad your getting that synchro whipped into shape! We missed you on this one, but there will be more.
Cooler trips are great. Around here fall is really the best... all the roads are closed in Spring till late May. But this year we're out on any CO fall trip. We're actually taking the bus up through the Tetons, Yellowstone NP, and Glacier NP for 3 weeks starting the 2nd week of September I've never been to WY, MT or ID before so this will be all new territory. I'm stoked!
But thats not to say you or anyone else couldn't coordinate a fall trip. I love these mountains that time of year. All any of these trips take is someone to organize them... If you plan it, they will come! |
Right on Chris. The Syncro is now turning into the Murphy's Law job! Replacing all of the cooling system and going to drop the tank to reseal it. I may be down this whole season, sad to say! Plus my wallet is getting really, really thin!
BTW, I am not up for traveling those FS roads without you, bro! You know them well and if I go on my own, I won't be found for weeks. _________________ "Two things are infinite: The universe and human stupidity; and I'm not sure about the universe." Albert Einstein

Thanks for all the kind words! This was a really fun trip with a great group! It's always fun to introduce folks to some of our favorite spots.
Rich & Manfred, thanks for making it out for that first night with us. You guys haven't missed any of our Colorado trips (nor has Bubba!) and it wouldn't have felt the same to not have you guys for part of it.
And AWESOME pics Greg! I really need to learn how to get more out of my camera. Your sunset shots from the top of Elwood Pass turned out perfect.
I really had a great time and enjoyed meeting new friends. I'm amazed at how well everyone gelled on this trip. Great conversations at our stops and around the campfire. Just an awesome weekend! Can't wait for the next one. |

Great pics of a great time, cant wait to do it again. Here are the shots I got, the good ones anyway. Still do no justice for the amazing beauty we all experienced. BIG props to all involved in coordinating this event.

Awesome trip!
I did about 500 miles, met some great bus folks and had a great time. Thanks so much for Chris leading the way on some perfect bus roads and an amazing camping site at 11,500 feet. I camped the night before at the Penitente campground cause I missed the updated camp note. No worries, it was at a good location for me to stop the first day after getting out of Denver a bit late. I have some good pics I'll post when I get a chance, but a lot of mine look like the ones posted. We were all looking at the same shots. Anyway, thanks all for the great weekend and welcoming me into the fold. Can't wait for the next adventure.
Cheers.

Thanks for sharing the pics! I made it home ok. Camping at 11.5K is amazing. I could not have done that w/ my lungs. Thanks again for hosting this Chris. I will offer my help for next year if Rich wants. Every one get home OK? Bubba's bus is the bomb in the pics. _________________ Fat chick owner/operator |

Great pics, Greg!
Hope everyone has made it home safe & sound. Thank you all for coming. Sorry some of you missed out. It was a great group and a ton of fun!
We should do it again sometime. Rich says he's workin' on next year's.
Here are some stats about the trip:
Including people who popped in Friday night, we had as many as 8 buses.
For the long haul, we had 5 buses (2 split and 3 bay), 10 people, 4 of which were female (Girls Rock!), 2 children, 8 adults, and 5 dogs. With the exception of Stu who flew through Saturday morning, it was an all Colorado bus group with Tom from Denver driving from the furthest away. We camped at about 8800ft on Friday and 11500ft on Sat.
Here were the best of our pics.
