Zac,
How is the car coming along? We took ours out for Thanksgiving and had a great time. I did however kill the 002 box . _________________ Cheers!

Glad you found a transmission!
I will keep you informed on the Subaru 5 speed. My buddy is putting one in his Class 5 unlimited Thing. _________________ Cheers!

Seems to see how my luck goes. I did find a 5-rib should have it next week. should be back up and running as soon as I can explain how its fixed lol. it will be interesting to see what other trans setups people come up with and how they preform. _________________ GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!!

That stinks! Sorry to hear about the trans. A couple of my Buddy's are changing over to 5 speed Subaru transmissions. I'm looking forward to seeing how durable they are.
I will keep an eye out for a 5 rib. Both of the ones in my garage are 3 rib. _________________ Cheers!

Well car was running great. Took the Wife for a ride around the block. We were a block away from the house and blew 2nd gear in the tranny. So needless to say I now need a trans for the car. the bad part is I'm probably going to have to wait until late this year to replace it. We are building a house and going to be moving around July/August. So car is going to have to go on the back burner. That being said I am looking for a good core 002 5 Rib to build if anyone has one they are looking to sell. _________________ GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!!

Thank you. Ya I have plenty of clearance on the sides. I wish I had more clearance between the bottom of the oil pan and the top of the skid plate. I need to make a custom pan that holds another quart of oil that is about a .25-.5 inches shallower.
My goal is to hit a race in or by 2018. Have a lot of parts to collect between now and then. This car is not helping the progress of the 5 car. Building two cars at a time is a bad idea on top of building a house. Once we get past the move I will start on the new car. _________________ GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!!

Everything is looking very clean. I like the way you mounted the motor from the top of your cage with the heim joints. That is a change we are planning to make when we replace the 002 with an 091.
This may be a funny question but... Have you tried to take your drain plug out? At our first oil change we were enlightened to the fact that the plug was about a 1/4 inch too long and could not be completely removed.
Do you plan to race the 5 car and what is your time frame? I have a Buddy that is currently rebuilding a Subi powered 5 car and is looking to race it a few times in 2017. _________________ Cheers!

Moving along a little at a time. Getting a lot done. Motor mounts, skid plate, coolant lines mounted, brain for radio mounted under passenger seat, exhaust, bracket for GPS mount

Thanks. I'm going to see how it runs. I would like to find some scoops for the rear windows to help direct the air in which will also help once I mount my oil cooler. the rear of the car is very open so there is already a lot of air flow. _________________ GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!!

Nice job on the install! It looks like it is safe and out of harms way. Are you planning to do some ducting to channel air to it? _________________ Cheers!

So the Air cooled is gone. Sold.
picked up my 2.2 for 200 bucks
Fits in the car nice. When I build the engine cage I designed it for this motor. The 1600 just looked out of place. there was a ton of extra room.

The research I have done and people I have talked to all points to putting the radiator right where the one in you class 5 car is... as close to what would be the torsion tube as possible. That is supposed to be safest and smoothest riding place for a radiator to live.
Our location works until you start getting rough with the car,.. It was explained to me that where it sits in your 5 car is like holding it in your hands and shaking it as hard as you can vs putting it on the end of a 8' stick, lifting it above your head and smacking it to the ground!
It makes sense to me and after one broken and one leaking aluminum radiator, I ether have to be "nice" to the car or move it. It's going to get moved to the rear window area! |
ya makes sense. I did some measurements last night. I'm going to locate it just inside the rear window. I don't think I can have the room behind my seats to go that far forward. it should work nicely just inside the window. _________________ GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!!

Interesting.
Who built it?
Has it been raced?
If so, by whom? |
It was built by Scott from SKM. he built the car back in 2013 and raced it 7 times I believe. last being rage at the river in vegas in 2015. _________________ GO BIG OR GO HOME!!!!
