I finally managed to get out to Boris’s and see the Shorrock and the bits that came with it. It seems to be all there. Two carburettors were sent so I’ll be able to choose depending on what fits and runs best. Disappointingly it didn’t travel very well. Both pulleys have been chipped and the stand has been broken around one of the screw holes. Nothing that can’t be overcome, but I’d prefer to have done without the complexity. I’ll have to search out somebody who can weld cast iron and will build up the metal then machine it down to shape for both of them. The stand is a cinch. Lots of good TIG guys about.
The plan is to get all of it stripped down, cleaned up, water blasted and new kits installed for the lot of it.
Progress will be slow because I’m back in NZ from Sunday. But at least the pandemic isn’t going to be a hold up

That damage is disappointing.
That's why the original kits arrived in a stury wooden box.
Hope it won't be too difficult to find someone to make a repair. Ask Kev Barry from the FB group if he knows anyone who could repair it. The pullies will be easy to replicate. _________________ John.

It really cheeses me off when I see something broken like that, Nicholas. I think there is a subspecies of Homo sapiens that can, and will, break anything, even the indestructible.
I'm out of town at the moment (grandfather duties) but can't wait to get back home so I can take you out for a drive in my "reborn" and fully certified Ghia. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Nicholas - If you really thought about it, emigrating to WA, you could drive your Cab all year round. If you stay in NSW you may have to fit a snorkel to you engine

I doubt it. Wrong colour, hybrid interior, RHD conversion, modified suspension, modified brakes. There must be better examples on the Samba. Any lowlight cab would easily trump this one.
Btw. Today at the hardware store I was asked what I would take as an offer for it. I’m not selling but I wonder what ridiculous number I should put out there just in case. I'm thinking Dr Evil with my pinky to my lip as I say "One Million Dollars".

Three days short of the last post on the thread I bookmarked when I started my restoration in 2013, and behold, Sir Nicholas is back!
The best RHD vert on theSamba?
Wish you were here, Nicholas, now that my car is (finally!) back on the road and legal. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I’m back in Australia for a few weeks. I’m doing work on my house. That’s the main reason for this trip. I need a ladder but I sold the Passat. The answer is…. Be careful
It was delivered without a problem.
Of course the weather has been really bad. We had to work inside the car space so the Ghia has to endure a long rinse in rain water.
When I get her indoors I’ll let the pedestal fan blow air around her. That and a wipe down with a chamois.

Look at these.... Some RHD floor mats. Original and in reasonably good condition.
I'll get them cleaned up and see if they can be recoloured to suit my car..

Actually, for the first part of the drive Jane had me on a WhatsApp video call with the phone mounted on the dash so we could talk and I could see out. It was lovely seeing familiar streets and listening to the purr of that engine. I was a virtual passenger. Very unusual but a lot of fun.

I sense withdrawal symptoms, Nicholas.
I've met the deadline with my latest writing project, so some outing in a Ghia this weekend is on. Real, as opposed to virtual. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Neglect is not permitted in my garage and my Ghia had been sitting stationary far too long. International borders are closed on account of Covid preventing my ability to return to Australia in the near term. So as a diligent custodian of this fine work, I delegated the task of exercising this machine to my trusted friend Jane Caldwell who took it on a brief road trip to the central coast. Even in the middle of winter it was nice to have the girls enjoy themselves with the top down.

I'm happy its been useful,

Quick question about your antenna placement.Scott |
I used the German placement guide which had unambiguous metric dimensions. I recall the-now-absent-KGPR-template didn't carry dimensions and thus depended printing to the correct size. Not being able to guarantee that is the reason I elected it less preferable.
Similar to the KGPR template and on the Samba, is a template from a Blaupunkt installation guide.
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/sapphire_i_kg_8_62.php
I wonder if the KGPR templet was derived from that?
The antenna threads are somewhat devalued now, with those broken links. Maybe it's time for updates pointing to information resident on the unbreakable Samba site.

Hello Nicholas,
Your thread is like an annuity, it just keep giving and giving!
Quick question about your antenna placement. I do realize that antennae were originally a dealer placed option so there is a variation on the exact location. I have also seen both the German link that you posted in the Antenna Placement thread, which differs from other sets of measurements that I have found, such as those given in the instructions from Hirschmann for a Ghia, as well as personal notations from other cars (Thank you rcooled).
I see that you referenced the KGPR template, which unfortunately is no longer active, but since your antenna placement looks so good I figured that I would ask if perhaps you might still have it somewhere. I have also emailed KGPR so if they get back to me I will update it in the Antenna Placement thread. Thanks again!

Kent, If you are keen to see photos of that trim just browse through my gallery because I’ve posted quite a lot of detail about the roof.
In this tread there’s some details back on the bottom of page 10. There’s also the last part of my Aussie road trip thread after I crashed into a kangaroo. To fix everything I had to take the roof off for the second time. I have some good close up details you might like.
As for the dash. Too late. It went to a happy home long ago.
Finally, the roof in that car was somewhat trashed back then. The rear window was blown out and most of the padding had fallen out. That’s why it appears folded back to something almost flat. Without the back window it can fold back further than normal.
