Rear drum back in place. With only 27K miles, we felt no need to replace 'em.
New front drums in place.
According to April Wine, it's official: "Cause she's a roller now, a high roller baby". Finally, wheels & tires! Original tires in storage. |

Now that it's ready to roll, it's time to get get it running, and put the hydraulic brake lines on. |

It's hand brake time. Or "emergency brake", as we call it in the U.S. Here are all the parts that make up the assemble. |

Found a rebuilt starter left over from the '70's or early '80's. It may have come from Warshawsky's (in Chicago)! It was in a box, in my garage along w/three other rusty starters.

Correct brake master cylinder. I was looking at the fluid passage holes in the output ports (pressure side), there is a difference in the size of holes between disk brake & drum! I wonder how many people are running the wrong master cylinder? |

Randy that starter is for a Beetle. Make sure your trans has a bushing for the shaft. |

X2 I was just going to post this but you beat me too it. That is the wrong starter for a Thing. It will work as long as you have the bushing like Ron said, but these starters are not as powerful as the correct auto-stick style |

The 181 used an Auto Stick starter!? Well, there's someTHING I didn't know. Note pic of correct bushing in place. I just don't remember that...I'm still pondering what it all means. Click on image to enlarge. Thanks for the heads-up guys.

Speaking of 181 specific parts. Here is an original 181 front suspension bump- stop, next to a standard Type 1 bump-stop. They mount to the top of the shocks. Click to Enlarge. |

This projects been going on for so long now, that I decided we needed a motivational slogan. I voted for "SomeTHINGs" Gotta Give" or "Do your THING Baby". But Rosie always wins.

Doing brake lines. I find THE THING SHOP's brake lines just a little long. |

The mostly complete chassis getting "flat" towed, to the other garage, where the body awaits it. I put "electrical tape on the tow bar to protect the paint. Note the rubber seal now installed. No metal repair work whatsoever was done to this chassis. The chassis was dipped by Redi-Strip, and then powder coated, that's it. Click on Images to Enlarge. |
