This is for tranny gurus. Okay fine...for anybody!
I have a way to install the detent balls (springs installed) in the transmission gear carrier without a screwdriver and in under 10 seconds!!!! No grease, no tiny spoons, no hemostats!
This should be an interesting forum.
You tell me yours and I will tell you mine. I challenge people at BugOuts to do this and if they can do it under 10 seconds, I will pay them $20. You will NOT get $20 for solving this problem.
How about it tranny gurus? Under 10 seconds...!!!!
Let us have it ..chop ...chop!

Okay..fine. 30 seconds then?
How about 1 whole minute? 60 seconds folks.
The gear carrier is pretty worn from the thousands of shifts from the factory. They are pretty tired by the time you rebuild the tranny.
We re-bush this carrier to bring it back to life. Some use Aluminum..some soft brass...and yet soneone else use hard bronze.
I use hard bronze...more expensive but very much durable.
When the selector shafts are taken out, the detent balls fall out. Now...how do we put these little bastards back in there without screwing up the bores.
If you use a screw driver or grease....you can also post. I am just curious how well that turns out too.

6 seconds!
Last night I was faced with installing a shift rod, so I thought about your challenge for a couple of minutes. I had an idea that took me about 3 min to make a tool. I took an early 3-4 shift rod and ground a taper on the end. With the ball sitting on the spring in the bore, push this new tool in and it automatically compresses the ball into the passage. Rotate this tool 180ยบ. Then install the correct shift rod and push out the tool.
6 seconds.
A USPS money order will suffice. |

You got it my man! Was I right? Under 10 seconds?
That is it. That is the way to do it. These days one has to be smarter than the ballbearing.
I wish today was the Bug Out. You would be $20 richer.
But thanks for being a good sport. Now everyone will know how to put that silly ballbearing in without screwing up the bore.

I dunno.....I didn't see a requirement to attend the BugOut for the sawbuck above. What does the Samba jury have to say about this?
This method does not work for 5th on a Berg 5 as I discovered tonight. What a PITA. I was thinking an upgrade would be to grind the taper on the backside of the Berg 5 5th gear shift rod. I'm gonna look into that on the next one I do. |
