i'D like to know, what's bad about taking a panel and cutting windows?
is it that the overall job is less perfect? the rust come faster?
why should we avoid windows conversions? |

Because you ruin the bus by taking away it's originality. If you want a bus with windows that buy one. It also devalues the bus. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

Unless it's a rare camper conversion like my 66 double door Sundial Camper. Windows don't hurt a true camper at all. _________________ Sanborn7

Some would argue a "true" camper came from the factory with windows. _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

BAM! Crofty comes out swinging! So my Sundial is half American - but hey, I can live with it. I'm curious if there are any double door Westy's? I've never seen one - but I'll bet they are COOOL! _________________ Sanborn7

hacking windows or other mods into buses is a sign of serious moral and mental degeneration. Look at Lind.. you don't want to end up like him, do you?

LOL glad you have a sense of humor. I have never seen a DD Westy, but that has always been one of my dream buses.
I heard that 66-67 Sundials were mostly kombi's and the earlier ones were based on panels. I didn't see any pics of yours in the gallery. Are there any? _________________ Your Vanagon sucks, Stop waving at me.

the 66 double door in the classifeds today sold in one hour for $4500 - you decide if it's worth anything. _________________ Sanborn7

I am planning on coverting my 1960 Double Door Panel into a camper. I will not cut windows in, but have picked up two sets of high hinged cargo doors. This way to revert back to a panel, all is needed is swapping the doors. _________________ Jamie Auch

If you are not cutting windows in the doors - why do you need a spare set to revert back? I don't understand. _________________ Sanborn7

i don't think a north american camper conversion done by EZ, Sundial or Riveria is all that bad, especially if it is complete...it's part of the interesting history of the VW camper bus in America...and always attracts some attention because they are not Westfalias....
the problems really comes when the stuff is done on a homemade level...it's a case by case situation, but always worth less in my mind than the original version of the bus...
if you want something nostalgic, with a heritage and an enthusiastic following, stick to a proper camper conversion...Westy, Riveria, Sundial and EZ Camper are the big ones in North America...also Devon and Dormmobile, which are more popular in Europe (i think)...
on the other hand, if you want something more contemporary, unique, or custom looking, then homemade conversions and interior swaped busses could be a good deal, since alot of enthusiasts avoid those types of busses...
you can always do your own interior, which it sounded like you were curious about with that metal interior thread...again, that be smarter/ cheaper to do on a non-correct or incomplete interior'ed late model splitty...just realize that what could be cool as hell to you might sour someone else's stomach...also realize that it probably won't be worth as much as a factory correct bus
i've found that DIYing the camper interior with some attention to detail does result in little bit of props from folks, since it takes some extra effort and is entirely unique...it also can be entirely customized for your purposes, unlike the factory built campers... _________________ Wish List:

Stanw3,
Sorry I was not clear. I am using windowed doors with jalousies insted of the panel doors. The bus will look like your passenger side, on both drivers and passenger side. Am I making sense? _________________ Jamie Auch

gotcha - you will have windows because you are swapping for doors that are already cut. Now I get it. Thanks! _________________ Sanborn7

This way I can have a panel and a camper all in one, if I ever get off my ass and get the bus running _________________ Jamie Auch
