|
|
I never noticed there wasn't a specific electrical section here, in all these years. Nonetheless! I have a quick question.
Im taking apart my Squareback gauge, speedometer first, the little gears inside that run the numbers, what kind of lube or grease is best on those? Basic suspension grease? I have some plumbers grease would this stuff work for a couple dabs? I've been watching Youtube VW gauge restorations and everyone seems to use something different.
Thanks.

I'm not sure on the grease but I will answer the other comment

Make sure you use a decent description too in case it's something people want to find a pic of in the future. _________________ How to Post Photos

The half dozen times I've taken apart speedometers over the years I have used just basic white lithium grease. It's thick enough to not run off the gears but not so thick that it gums them up. You don't need to glob it on. Just lightly coat the gears with it with a small acid brush. |

NO! Please don't use any greases used anywhere else in your car. Not suitable.
The best grease for instruments and fine gears ....you can find at any great hobby store. These are staples for high end RC cars, aircraft and model trains. They are synthetics and made just for fine plastic gear trains.
The prime company for these products is Labelle. Many factories ai have been in also use Labelle products for mechanical control panel gauges and sensitive instruments.
Labelle 102 is an excellent one

A better one.....most commonly used in high dollar model railroad locomotive gears is this

Those gears are virtually identical in size, pitch and material to speedometer gears. Ray |

Agree! Superlube is the only commonly available grease I would use. It's excellent! Great on plastics, EP rated, Teflon based.
It could be used no problem on speedometer parts because it will never oxidize and get crusty like lithium greases. I still think it's a little thick for fine speedo gears but in a pinch it's what I would use if I had nothing purpose made. Ray |

Super Lube made for plastic is what I use on the plastic gears. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Not all parts are made the same. NOS OE/OEM parts made mainly in West Germany, Early Germany, and Early Brazil are where VW produced the best quality parts and best fitting products.

The Labelle products are specially made for plastics. While I love me some Superlube....Labelle makes oils and greases just for fine gear trains. You should try some. Less issues with drag, wear and chatter in cold weather areas.
