Hello all, have a 1968 beetle that has been sitting in a barn for years. Bug has always started but today had to charge the battery and attempt to start, starter seemed to engage but wouldn't turn engine over, lots of clicking from starter solenoid. Ended up pushing starting and the Beetle purred as usual. After short spin pulled back in barn and shut off, went to restart and the starter solenoid engaged and vehicle started. Shut the ignition off again and generator light stayed on, restarted and turned off but generator light remained on. Quickly disconnected battery, red wire from battery to VR hot. VR was replaced years ago and have a feeling contacts are stuck closed?
Any ideas of how to remedy the situation? Don't want to burn up the charging system or the Bug, it's been in the family since 1968.

Would appreciate any wisdom on this issue, thanks in advance,

rks

Grab a favorite screwdriver by the blade end and give the voltage regulator a few good whacks with it's handle.

Pull the VR and replace or repair.

the 'big' wire coil in the VR is stuck closed. It 'acts' like a diode to only let current flow from the generator to the battery. When you turn the ignition switch to 'off' voltage back feeds from the VR to the idiot light and it gets a ground to 'light up' from the oil pressure switch on the engine. The 'small' wire coil determines the field voltage thus the output voltage of the generator, when it's working correctly.
