I am repairing a 2 liter engine and I am trying to get it to crank over out of the bus.
I have what at I think is a 002 transmissions bellhousing and a starter from a bug 1600 which I started using a bug swingaxle transmissions bellhousing.
The end of the starter shaft barely enters the starter support bushing in the 002.
I hear the bendix engage and the starter motor spin but I think the teeth never engage.

If I have a mismatch with the teeth I think I would hear it grind and see t on the gears.

I have 3 starters and all 3 appear to have the same length snout.

Am I making a mistake about something?

002 has its own starter dimensions/ratings. + one with extra tenth of a hp for the torque convertor on the automatic models. IIRC. That's probably the issue.

Get a starter for a late bus. Been there before

Sounds like the bellhousing is from a 091 transmission, so as mentioned you would need a matching starter. Somewhere out there is a post showing the dimensions of the various Type 4 bellhousings.

Thanks everyone, that was it. I had used the only 091 part I had, I thought it was a 002 because of the 2 top mounting ears.
I should have looked at the part number.

Like everyone said, the starter mount is ~1cm farther from the flywheel than the others.
And of course I had 3 short drive gear starters.

The 2000cc cranked over when I used a 002 trans to mount the starter.
Now I need to find another bell housing to use, will a bug IRS work?

Thanks again
