I disassembled my '59 split case transaxle and have it on the stand, with both axles still in place. I'm trying to remove the axles but first have to get the transaxle halves to separate since they are captive in the case halves.

Something (possibly the differential and ring gear) is hanging the starter side case half from lifting off all the way. I have a gap between the halves of about 1/4 - 3/8 inch but it doesn't want to go any further. All bolts that I can see, including the one that goes all the way through the halves, have been removed.

Any suggestions on what could be hanging it up?

thank you

Ted

You missed a bolt/nut..
Starter side, just ahead of where the axle flanges bolt. More specifically ahead of the bolt at the 2oclck stud.

The diff bearings get happy where they are and don't like to release from the case halves. Heat the bell area where the axle tube seats with a propane torch while tapping and prying, thats what usually gets them free.
Theres a 10mm in the bell housing too. Split it with the shift rails down, and lift the passenger side half up.

Thank you esde I'll give that a try. I was also wondering if those bearings might have something to do with the stickage lol.
