After it was started and rpm's were raised initially the battery would go from 12.56 to 13 then would slowly start to drop. It was like the battery was suppling power but not getting recharged. |
1. Voltage across battery terminals while at 2000-3000 rpm should be about 13.5 to 14.5 volts if charging system is OK.
2. Voltage across battery terminals while trying to crank/cranking the engine (pull coil wire out for this test) should be over 9.6 volts after about 5 full seconds if the battery is OK. |

"The reading was 11.06". I'm sorry, English is my first language. Was the reading of 11.06 in response to Test 1 above or Test 2 ?????? _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Going to replace the generator. Will let you know if that does the trick. |

Well - it definitely is not charging. However, there is a straightforward test to determine whether generator or voltage regulator is at fault:

Having a really hard time removing that pulley from the old generator. At this point I think its not going to come off. Can you buy one? |

Sure, new pulley can be purchased, like https://www.jbugs.com/product/043903109.html
But if you cannot remove the pulley (try Autozone loaner gear puller), you'll need a brand-new woodruff key for your new generator.
https://www.jbugs.com/product/N127051.html
Getting a generator pulley off is typically way simpler than a generator replacement job will be - are you up to such task? And I haven't seen any pictures, so we're taking your word that you have a generator and not an alternator.
But - did you run the tests from Speedy Jim's page about determining that generator is bad or voltage regulator is bad like I posted earlier????? Or are you just going to throw a new generator on it and hope????? _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. Yeah, we are just going to throw $$ at it and got a new generator. Slowly but surely we will have a new engine. The AutoZone loaner is a great idea! Already ordered a new one but will actually try that as well. |

Just a little update. We replaced the generator over the weekend and the car started right up and is holding a charge for the last few days. While it was a pretty straight forward job getting that nut off the fan was crazy hard. We both have bruises on our forearms from reaching behind the fan. Now on to the insanely bad gas smell. |
