I agree and have never done it, or even thought about it.

It wouldn’t be bad at all.

It would be worse than bad. It would be a horrible choice to attempt that and would make absolutely no sense.

It's actually recommended to pull it out as a unit in Type 3's with IRS, per the manual. It's just an awkward process in trying to keep it balanced.

Yes, but this tool will help.

So, engine and transaxle will keep in balance.

But, of course, a second pair of hands will help during moving.

On a car that’s designed to install the engine and trans as a unit it’s a no-brainer.

I balanced this Buick V6 bolted to the transaxle using a KEP adapter on a regular floor jack by simply using a piece of 2x10 wood and stuck it in there by myself. I performed this swap when I was 19 back in 1979.

At first I thought it was strange seeing there weren’t any frame horns to support the transaxle since I had never owned a VW built like that. It did make the installation of the engine and trans pretty easy, doing them together was how the job was meant to be performed.

So what does that have to do with VW?

Apples and bowling balls.
