Nice job of shade tree wrenching!
Astonishing those Subarus are such oil burners, I haven't had to add even one quart to the Zetec between changes in 80k. Hopefully this will slake the thirst!
Good luck getting to the Crane fest. _________________ Currently:

I have two Subaru 2.5 SOHC engines (1 as a swap in my 76 Westy) and haven't had any issues with oil burning so it must be a high mileage engine thing. Both of mine have just under and just over 200,000km on their clocks with oil changes every 5,000km. _________________ *******************************

Quickie update.
Counterfeit (?) flywheel crankshaft seal added a lot of trouble to my preparations for a weeklong (shakedown!) trip.
Worn out in 80 miles. I have closeup pics. Professional name brand seal.
It was no fun to have this problem while trying to get ready.
I replaced it with a Subaru seal and all is good, departing this afternoon.
20 miles now, no leaks, and *ideally* consuming much less past the oil rings too.
I have a lot of fingers crossed right now.
If anyone has any extra luck to bequeath, please send some my way.

you guys will never get it...
the whole point of a swap is to be able to get quality OEM DEALER parts from...guess fuckin who? THE DEALER
The amount of time people spend being cheap is rapidly eaten by doing the job twice....
simply amazing
"the ebay kit was 200 bux cheaper than the dealer"
yea... we do things right because we do them twice...
or what's the other one.... never enough money to do it once but always enough time to do it twice _________________

Glad you're back on the road! Keep us posted.
I try to use Subaru parts as much as possible but usually buy them online. My local Subaru dealer usually charges up to double MSRP on parts, even when I show them the prices from an online Subaru dealer. _________________ '84 Westy, '93 Subaru ej22 and Subarugears 5speed

I changed first oil at 80 miles, along with the crankshaft seal.
The oil was sparkly. Which surprised me.

Especially a seal.
Seal technology is well-developed.
We’re camped 150 miles out now, at Frenchman Coulee, near “The Gorge” amphitheater.
Oil level looks same as when we departed.
Van’s running quiet & smooth just like it was a month ago.
I suppose I’ll change oil again at ~200 miles then it’s time to find out if it’s healed. _________________

Nice! Ah the gorge, " Do you want to camp on the quiet side or the loud side?" a simple gravel driveway between the two sides. |

My oil was sparkly at a 100 mile change after partial rebuild on the jdm ej253. Drank a bunch of oil too. Changed it again at 600, clean with no more metal sparkles and no consumption of oil. Got about 2000 on it now and the oil is clean woth no loss. Ill change it one more time before falling into the regular routine.
What oil are you running?
Congrats and good luck _________________ so many roads i know
