My first Beetle 1969. Runs great, then dies at stop. Four times now in three weeks. Cranks fine, battery strong. After 30 minutes it starts. I changed out coil, plug wires, condenser, then went to dual Empi carbs and headers. It’s a stock 1600 cc single port. This thing rips.
Today, dies at stop sign. Cranks won’t start. Wait 40 minutes and it starts. Engine is not over heating. What say you?

Plugged fuel outlet in tank, or inline filter or both. Outlet in tank has a mesh screen like a filter that can get clogged from years of debris and rust.

Another possibility is an intermittent ignition switch or harness connector on bottom of steering column.

Could it be vapor lock? The old trick was to put a couple wooden clothes pins on the fuel line.

How is your gas tank vented? Is the vent hose plugged? You had a gas smell issue earlier. Did you fix that?

Still have the smell. Most think it’s vapor lock but my mechanic still thinks electrical. Just dropped it off. We’ll see.

Carbs are brand new, just installed. Happened with old carb too. I’ll let y’all know what mechanic finds. All my research points to vapor lock.

Fuel leak was found in soft line just before copper line. It was leaking into heater duct so no spots on the ground.
Starts great when cold. When warm it sometimes won’t start. If you put the gas pedal to floor it fires right up. We will change out fuel pump next.

The throttle application when warm is quite normal.

I can't find the correct page in the owners manual. But it is listed as a normal operation for hot start up.

If your car is running and driving great. Live with it for now.

Note that the owner's manual instructions are for stock engine and carb setup.

But with dual aftermarket carbs & etc. modifications, it's anybody's guess as to what will work or not -- each mod job is a law unto itself...

Welp, reading helps. Thoughts it was stock stuff. Good luck!

All is well. Turns out that it was the fuel pump. Starts and runs perfect. Thanks all.
