Hello
Well today I started to drop the motor in my 70 Sqb to replace the main oil seal, all was going well until I noticed the input shaft ( not sure of correct terminology as I don’t have a manual to hand) coming out of the auto box. I could not slide it back into the tranny so had no option but to drop that too. On the ground they came apart with no problems. The input shaft( actually 2) pull out from the transmission with ease. My question is should this be the case or should they be secured into the automatic transmission with say a clip?
I’m going to need to replace the input shaft seal on the transmission as the fluid just pored out of it. Does anyone have a part number for this seal?
I’ve just ordered a Bentley manual as all the books I have don’t cover this.

That small diameter shaft is the pump input shaft. Make damn sure it's not bent, and that it's seated ALL the way in before you put the torque converter back in place. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Yeah those shafts slide out all of the time / no biggie. However, the biggie comes when its time to install the engine to the trans. You have to make sure that all shafts are pushed back into place, and the torque converter is properly seated as well. Hold it up, twist and push it in at the same time.
Important, Important, Important, When you install the engine there MUST be about 1/2" clearance between the torque converter and the flex plate. If you don't have this clearance, the torque converter is not seated in far enough into the trans. Pull the engine out and try and seat the torque converter into the trans further. If you don't, YOU WILL crush the trans oil pump, and I no longer have any extra ones to sell, because of this. _________________ 69 road Bug 2110

Thanks guys that’s a relief. My next obstacle to overcome is how remove/replace the gland nut with the correct torque. As Bob says “don’t just jam a screwdriver through the flex plate “.
Whilst trying to sleep last night I started to think of the moment I started to separate the auto box from the engine, as I did it literally dumped all the atf over my drive, this just didn’t seem right to me and I’m not sure exactly where it came from _________________ 1962 Gulf Blue Patina Deluxe Beetle

Yep I definitely pulled the motor and the torque converter. I will look for a seal, any recommendations on suppliers? I might not find one over this side of the pond. Automatics are thin on the ground here( this is my first one)and type 3s even more so. _________________ 1962 Gulf Blue Patina Deluxe Beetle

Can anyone confirm if the pump shaft ( small shaft in center) is fully seated in this position? I seem to remember all shafts sitting flush but I might be mistaken. I REALLY don’t want to mate the torque converter and then motor to find I have screwed up the pump shaft. When I rotate the shaft in this position it does feel like it is rotating the pump as I can feel the resistance.

I've used the angle iron trick on a couple of AT's in the past, with my IR impact and some red loctite. I make sure the air compressor is pumped up first before trying to set the gland nut.
What I was tempted to do was modify a brake drum adapter for a Torque Miester, then gear drive it to the 253 ft lbs of torque. I haven't had to pull the flex plate off an AT engine in a long while though.
I've never seen that tool before though, and I wonder where one would find one. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Nope I’ve never seen a tool like that. This is my first time messing with an auto and wish I’d done my research before hand. _________________ 1962 Gulf Blue Patina Deluxe Beetle

The drive rod does stick out like you have here.
You can grasp the rod with your fingers. _________________ https://imgur.com/user/FisherSquareback/posts

Thanks Mike, that’s a relief. I was doubting myself massively. My Bentley manual should be here any day now 🤙 _________________ 1962 Gulf Blue Patina Deluxe Beetle

The seal I had originally ordered was for a 68-70 Auto Bug and definitely doesn’t fit. On Multi69s recommendation I searched for a Timken seal on Amazon Uk.
This is what I have ordered.

One nice thing about Rock Auto is they list parts by part number, that you can cross reference with other sites. My son has done that many times while looking up parts for either his Jetta or his Civic. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

You guys are lucky to have suppliers like that, we do have some Aircooled specific parts stores but they hardly sell any parts for auto trans. _________________ 1962 Gulf Blue Patina Deluxe Beetle

It has been mentioned that when I install the torque converter it must have a gap of 1/2” from the flex plate. How do I achieve this please, any tips or tricks ?
