The 741 transmission from the 356B T5 that I am restoring got new gears and a nice 12-bolt ring and pinion when it was built some years ago by the late Frank Lettini of Frank's Automotive in Sacramento. Although it shifts well and runs quietly, the case is somewhat dirty and tarnished. I would like to be able to clean and polish the case without disassembing it, but don't know how to go about it. Can anybody tell me how to do this? Thanks a lot.

Polishing the case reduces the surface area, seals the pours in the metal and reduces heat transfer.

As far as cleaning it.... a spray on degreaser, a scrub brush and a hose is all you need.

Dry ice blasting might give the results you want
