Abalone from California. So good.
Honorable mention: Geoduck clams.

So much good food here in California...

You'd also be hard pressed to find a better beer state as well.

I'll see your Jersey tomatoes and raise you Pennsylvania peaches.

There's a hollow near Gettysburg. That's where Musselman has their apple orchards. There are a few pear orchards then there are peaches.

Eat 'em over the sink, otherwise you be wearin' 'em. Cool

Just don’t bring up them Maryland blue crabs. When I was in NJ, they were called Jersey blue crabs and their the same blue crabs found up and down the coast. Many Maryland crabs are caught elsewhere.

Same blue crabs they catch off the dock in the city park in Bayonne. You don't wanna know what them things been eatin'. I'm thinkin' Jimmy Hoffa...

Apparently there are green crabs as well, an invasive species. The gulls like 'em just fine, maybe even prefer 'em over the blue ones.

If you are eating California abalone recently you are getting them from a poacher

Fron Wiki:
Commercial fishing of all abalone species in California has been closed since 1997 due to overfishing, but this recreational fishery for red abalone remained open in northern California until 2018.

One of the best things from California.

Santa Maria style Tri-Tip roast seasoning. Yum!

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Santa_Maria%E2%80%93style_barbecue

Speaking of tri-tip roasts. Yet another California discovery.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tri-tip

Now that I have mentioned tri-tip. I think it's on tonight's dinner menu! Very Happy

Nah man. We would free dive for Abalone as kids in the 70s/80s in Point Reyes area. Last time we grilled up Abalone was in the 90s. Just a cast iron pan and butter. I haven’t sampled any farm raised Abalone. Have you?

Those are the ones that crawl out of the bay and graze on your lawn.

Time flies. They were still legal last time I was in NorCal. I didn't eat any. There is too much cow available. If I eat cow every meal I'll never chew through all of it.

Speaking of crawling outta the bay...

There is a tiny sand beach in Jersey City right across from Manhattan where the horseshoe crabs crawl out in season. We're not talkin' little critters 2" across. These things are a foot across the short way.

They've been here for half a billion years. They were literally here when dinosaurs roamed the earth.

Too bad you can’t eat horseshoe crabs.
Hey how long has abalone harvesting been illegal? I remember on MTVs Real World the guy Puk caught one and ate it. I always wondered if that was legal back then.

For recreational purposes it’s been on and off for years. Also what type of Abalone changes as well. Very inconsistent. If that dork from MTV pulled up a black abalone it was probably illegal then. I believe that was illegal during 93-95 and Puk’s show was 1994. I looked it up. Embarassed

I don't know much about abalone aside from their shells make pretty inlays on guitar fretboards.

I made it out to Fort Bragg in '04 or so. Campground I stayed at was a base camp for abalone divers.

I was surprised at the size of abalone. They make mussels and clams barely worth the effort by comparison.

They must be legal to harvest somewhere. Baja, perhaps?

Jersey / NYC horseshoe crabs: Not everything has to be edible. It blows my mind the same critters found fossilized in rock are still alive near NYC. It also blows my mind we may eradicate them during my lifetime. Their ancestors swam with the dinosaurs half a billion years ago!

In Northern California and the Pacific Northwest we have clams worth the effort Wink

Yep, and The Tater Tot brothers started a little company known as Ore-Ida. aka Oregon-Idaho. Cusser should get a boner because Ore-Ida is now a Heinz company.
