Oh my, what have I done?
First carb problems, then distributer issues (fixed), now back to the carb.
36hp with a stock Pic28.
Will not start with a small dose of gas down the carb.
It ties at the very start of cranking the engine but immediately fails.
Once started with added fuel it runs (in the open garage) accelerates fine, idles fine.
Shut it off, immediately try again, maybe starts. Wait 5 minutes, no way.
(I recall from my teens (50 years ago) that my 55 needed a specific amount of throttle pushes for it to start, my single cab also needed some but it might have been only a couple.)

I would check fuel delivery. From the tank to the carb. Weak fuel pump can do this, or a plugged fuel tap.
Check the coil for good spark too. _________________ 1-0900722 die langsame grüne Schildkröte

I really cant make heads or tails of your symptom. Can you rephrase and clarify?
- what does "with added fuel" mean? poured down the carb, added through the bowl vent, or what? |

Is there gas in the tank, and is the fuel tap open?
Disconnect coil, disconnect fuel line to carb and put loose end in a container. Have someone crank engine while you see if gas gets into container. If so, you know the fuel pump is working. If no gas, then get into the fuel pump as to why.
If gas is being delivered to carb, take top off carb, remove float and put it into a small bucket of water. Does it float? If so, good. If not, bad.
Take out the valve that the float controls, does it open and close freely? If not, bad. _________________ my59: Well son, my grandfather died before I got to drive it, so does that answer your question?

Thanks for your suggestions and diagnostic steps.
To clarify, poured down the carb is pouring a bit of gas into the carb.
The engine started fine prior to my rebuild and dizzy issues which seem to have been related. I had a flat spot under load and it was diagnosed as a bad carb.... but I think it was really the vacuum line to the vacuum pump was not seated properly.
The float was tested prior to installing, but I will do so again as well as the pin that dictates the opening.
I have had a difficult time getting the line from the pump to the carb sealed at the carb. It is now, perhaps to the extent that its blocking the flow into the carb.
Ill have a go this weekend.

If gas is filling the carburetor then there is something wrong with the carburetor. If I let a carburetor sit too long without using it this is the exact symptom that shows up. Somethings clogging the circuit. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

Are you using an original VW steel fuel line between the fuel pump and the carb? Some repro steel fuel lines for 36hp engines are using a hard brass ferrule and don't crush/seal in the seats of the fuel pump or carb. The original VW ferrules were aluminum.
How old is your fuel pump? If it's tired or weak, you'll have a fuel delivery issue to the carb as long as the fuel line from the tank to the pump are clear. As others mentioned, lots of old VW's have dirty fuel tank line socks in the fuel tank reducing fuel flow to the pump. _________________ Contact me at [email protected]
