there's a photo of a whole array of desgns parked in a circle for consideration, I'll look it out when I'm back home (if I remember)
I do like the EA48 with its front drive set-up, it could have been a contender.

about 40 prototypes for a beetle successor are gathered together for spiegel magazine in 1967. a tricky decision to make as the beetle wasn't going to sell forever but do they stick with the rear engine or go front engine and water cooling?
