This is one experience I had over the summer buying a container if ice cream (unfortunately, I cannot remember the exact brand.) It was labeled as "ice cream" and not a "frozen dairy desert." Behind my shop space is a hillside covered in blackberries which arrive with a vengeance in mid-July. On the way home bought the ice cream and was unexpectedly delayed by a traffic accident. When finally getting it in the freezer, the sides of the container were a bit squishy/flexible.
Later in the evening removed the ice cream and the sides had firmed up. Opening up the top for the first time, a bit puzzled to find the volume inside was about 80% of what is normally packed into a container. Figured this shrinkage was due to the whipped air integrated into the processing of the product.

Next time you buy ice cream, tap the bottom of the carton and see if it sounds hollow. Some manufacturers (maybe most?) freeze the cartons upside down after they are filled, so they look full when you open them. _________________ Brian

I saw something on the BBC today about how a major ice cream maker is reformulating to allow storage at warmer temperatures, they have quite a few million display freezers in stores and a little increase in freezer temperature makes them heroes with the save the planet greenie crowd, uses less energy. Maybe others are F'ng with it in a similar manner?
I'd post a link but news feeds are blocked in Canada, the show was called "Click". _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

Umpqua as well. My Kryptonite is Umpqua Mudslide ice cream once in awhile. It really ought to come with a complimentary insulin shot, but NO HFCS and real ice cream.

Umpqua's Strawberry for me - love, love. I have the ice cream maker that my dad used to make homemade ice cream in - his strawberry (Hood's of course) and his peach ice cream were superb. He stopped making it once we all moved away, so now it's my turn. _________________ Xargaret

Hate to burst bubbles but :
Product is sold by weight, not volume.
Examples I used to fret about - cereal and chips.
"New and improved" could mean a whole lotta things, usually in the favor of the manufacturer, shipper, wholesaler, retailer, etc.
Retailers put the "staples" at the rearmost area or off in a corner, wanting you to go past other items they hope you will purchase. They change the location of items regularly to interrupt your shopping routine ; think "plan-a-gram". I hated those back in '84 when I worked at a grocery store.
Between convincing us to buy in bulk or piping air from the bakery & dumping it at the entrance among many other sneaky/clever schemes some of us don't stand a chance.
Marketing is a M-F.
As to ice cream not freezing, ours gets so that it can hardly be scooped. We maintain airflow in our freezer - it's never over packed & the setting is not extreme.
It wouldn't surprise me to find out there was a reformulation that saves all those involved a few pennies to make it, store it, ship it, & display it.
Buyer beware ... stay safe

A side note on Ice Cream, the Market I work at has been having issues w/ our retail freezers, every few days it will die, the grocery staff pulls all the products,
jams them in our main walk=in freezer, and later in the day we do a taste test on the ice cream, most of the time they end up giving it to the staff, I've been bringing home Tillamook Mud slide, super good! I sure hope they get that freezer fixed... _________________ Tom

That brings back memories! We had a farm in Tennessee and during the summer, we would put on our overalls and long sleeve shirts and pick blackberries. Those thorns would still get you though! Thanks for the memory! _________________ Oprn wrote: I'm getting to the age that any self propelled woman (no wheel chair or walker) looks HOT!! Oooo! look at that Babe! It's a BIG list (2500+ items) of mostly bad stuff to make food taste better and more profitable...pretty scary if you ask me.

I'll bet it's less expensive by me. _________________ “If you care for a thing long enough, it takes on a life of its own, doesn't it? Mending old things, preserving them, looking after them – on some level there's no rational grounds for it.”

I'm just now starting to learn all of this stuff. Why I had no energy as a teenager and throughout college. Joints hurt, tired all the time, GI issues most days. Now that I've been learning about modern "foods" and how they affect our bodies.. I've lost over 10lbs just by cutting wheat and added sugars. Lately, I’ve been making an effort to read the ingredient labels more than I used to.
It’s getting harder to find ice cream that Doesn’t have any ” Bioengineered ingredients “.
I used to enjoy Winn Dixie’s Key Lime pie ice cream, until I read this on the label. I called their toll free question line and spoke to a foreign sounding individual. I asked him What was this bioengineered ingredient, and why is it in the ice cream?
After a minute on hold, he came back telling me he couldn’t answer that question, and was there anything else he could help me with?
I told him, he Hasn’t helped with Anything so far.
Have a nice day. _________________ Drag bus! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s2MOVmKdhX4
