You're really going gangbusters on this project. I thought it was a "fill in project" while working on your bus. It looks like it's taken on a life of it's own now to be completed. I know how that goes though.
It's coming along nicely, and you're making great progress on it. |
Dan is an "all in" type a guy like us Bob. Glad he's found fun and excitement with restoring type 3's. |
It doesn't surprise me. While a Notch isn't a Square or a type 34, it is it's own unique body style. Sure they all share the same pan, but with different seat tracks. Early Squares (62-65) do however share some parts with a Notch (from the doors forward). While the rear of the car is the same as a Fastback.
I think it's really the learning experience that's got him intrigued, and pushing him to finish it. I know when I did my 71 Notch, that the differences kept me intrigued to get it done. And he's really making great progress on it too. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Moved on to the next stage: bodywork. Roof, front and rear aprons to be exact. All three with dents so after pulling, hammer and dollying and etc I did some filler work and primed with Urethane primer. Will block in a week or two so it has time to shrink up.
Meanwhile I started cleaning up the outer quarters, wire brushing sanding and rust treating the seams. I also went under and began wire brushing the underwise do the body which was a total nightmare. Will have to break out hand brushes and paper to get the little areas and then will rust treat, rinse and paint with epoxy.
Fun times. Not.

Finally got the ISP outerrocker and with some modifications got in. Fit with the inner was horrible. But what’s new in the world of aftermarket parts?
Anyway the car is likely the most solid it’s been in decades. I finally was able to prime the whole car. Will block the roof and aprons for the third time, scuff up the rest of the body and then shoot most of it. I’m not going to mess with the rear luggage compartment and bulkhead or the front bulkhead because the original paint is still good and I’m not doing a color change.
What a paint though. Glad I got to this point finally.

Painted the body today. Used a little over a quart of sprayable material. Three coats on the roof, aprons. Two coats on the window surrounds, threshold and dash and trunk. One coat on the wheel wells. Used Restoration Shop AU 4:1 with some reducer.

Took the body down to the shop and swapped pans. Body and pan are reunited and it feels so good.

Starting to put pieces back on. Was able to save and reuse the original sound insulation as well as the side pieces and the mat. They cleaned up nice.
Is there a pieces of wood or waterboard that goes between the back of the rear seat back and the trunk?

Yes, it's a kind of fiber board. Here's a pic from mt 71 Notch.
It hooks (via tabs) to the rear seat. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Well, I located the panel that goes behind the back seat (it was in the pile of stuff that came with the car) and I installed it
Also did the headliner…what a nightmare…but it turned out ok I think. I also installed the original pinch welt around the doors and windows.
Next up is installing the rear window and the windshield. I have the original trims, but the windshield is missing the two small coupling pieces. I can’t find any in the classifieds so if someone has a couple I can use them.

You are making some progress! Wow! I wish I Gad half your talent and didn’t have to rely on deadbeat body shops. I just met a guy in Mexico who rebuilds Westies in 3 months, from sandblasted bodies to finished goods. I personally think that’s all it should take. _________________ I'd be UNSTOPPABLE if not for Law Enforcement and PHYSICS.
I recycle old cars and parts, other than when I rot, that's as Green as I am going to get.
Thanks to my Tesla driving neighbors, I feel more relaxed driving my SUBURBAN and old VW's.

Thanks.
I used to use shops but got sick of the shoddy work for more and more money. I’d rather not do it, it’s a lot of work, but feel I have no choice these days. _________________ Go Reds! Smash state!

I agree. I know my 71 Notch took over a year to rebuild. Hell I had almost 4 months of solid welding alone, and that didn't include any body work (another 2 months). Pics of it in my signature. What wasn't included in them were the "tear down" pics, but those are in my gallery.
My T-34 was a 2 year rebuild project before I was able to drive it. I even included the pics I shot of the rebuild on here (in my signature). That car got the floors and front clip installed in Russ Wolfe's shop too (he posted up some pics of the work I did). Included in my pics were the modified disc brake spindles to allow for the use of wide 5 disc brakes up front. _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof
