OK ......
In my younger days I would tackle any project with Vim & Vigor!
The "Can Do" attitude!

Maybe I'm just feeling my age .....
but I'm looking at this 090 Automatic thinking ...... I'm pretty sure I can rebuild it....... but am I simply deceiving myself?"

I mean it is a simple matter of disassembly, cleaning, inspection and reassembly......

My transmission in my 1990 made a funny "crunch" on an upshift yesterday...... I better get my A$$ in gear and start getting ready! The 1990 unit has way over 200,000 miles on it but I've no idea if the trans is original or not.

This is a spare I've had for 10 years. It only has 116,000 miles on it. I know the history of this unit...... it is no random transmission off the street.

It is either Do It Myself or shell out $2000+ to have it done and wait .......

What say you?

Yay
Or
Nay

Go for it- You've got Kourt's extensive notes on the process. Not much in the way of tools is needed that is special at all.

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=616506&highlight=

I took our apart in my Basement Shop in the Summer of 2020 to see why the Oil Pump Shaft twisted and broke[ oil pump jammed with needle bearing failure]

It's the kits that are becoming scarce, or the quality of them, and any hard parts you might run into like drum, oil pump, etc, that I think are the stumbling blocks currently.
I sourced our recent seal and part update on our '84 Auto with a mixture of Porsche part numbers, one part from Ebay, one Speedi-sleeve from Amazon/Timken, and had on hand the Master Rebuild Kit if I needed it, but I ended up not breaking into the Master Kit I bought a few years ago.
Mix of suppliers, but I got the seals installed, bushing for the TC, speedi-sleeve for the TC and it's all still working and dry so far... Smile

you're going to have a stroke when you get todays prices

you're looking at 3K for a basic build and 3800+ for a top shelf build

whatever you decide, DO NOT fuck up either trans as parts are getting VERY hard to find

I vote “Yay”. Cleanliness and organization are key. You need a long bench so you can lay the parts out in order. The last time I did one, the apply pistons were not included in the kits. They had to be ordered separately.

Air test and measure as you assemble. Use the factory manual. One of our members sells new shims and valve body center plates in the classifieds. Go through the valve body as a separate project.

2nd gear brake band is inch pounds not foot pounds and don’t force anything. Vaseline works on the shaft square rings and the pump rings. Do the final measurement between the auto and differential. Don’t just reuse the same shims.

Shipping cross country twice is reason enough to do it yourself. I’ve read your posts and I believe this is within your wheel house.

I robbed this transmission years ago for my 86.

The 2nd gear band piston/cover was leaking horribly on my 86 and 2nd gear had a long upshift delay when cold.
Turns out that the 2nd gear piston seal was shot and the one from this transmission still had flex and shape.

The 86 is still running strong, now out in Tacoma.

Thanks for the encouragement!

I plan on taking this unit to the Pacific Ocean come Fall so a repair is high on my list. Probably 8,000 miles plus depending if I go to to my Brothers house in Nanaimo or not.........

You should do it, kits are affordable and it's a fairly easy job.

Replace the white plastic thrust washers, they get brittle with age: I sell them in the classifieds.

I also have the valve body separation plates should you need.

I'm leaving Monday to France, so if you need anything, it's now or August Wink

Aloha!

"You need a long bench so you can lay the parts out in order." YES!
You can do it. Read the Bentley a few times. And change the metal rings on the turbine shaft even if they don't look worn.

$2000 (in 2022) was more than worth it for me to take ours to a specialty shop. “A man’s gotta know his limits…” Laughing

Well...... feeling inspired I started cleaning up my workshop area in my garage/now workshop.

I have a SnapOn 6'stainless steel workbench top with the raised oil drip edge on it.
This should be perfect for messy oil based work.
I have another worktop in another room of finished wood that will be great for laying out the disassembled and cleaned components.
My Wife uses this room a lot for her crafts so I'll need to be careful of oil and grease in there.

The space is heated and air conditioned so I can work comfortably.
Good lighting, good internet and it can be kept clean quite easily.

Contacted Alika about his parts, hope he is able to ship before he leaves!

I see many suppliers of rebuilt kits...... any that are better or worse?
I plan to get a kit with the steels.

Dave

the Cobra kit 65006D
The rest is optional, but I would get the metal 3 tang thrust washers too.
Dosregard quantities from this order, that was for 2 transmissions plus 4 extra 65244 thrust washers.

OK!

Thanks for the ordering info.......

That only cost me a cool $400 this morning!

Now I need to pull my valve body and open it up to see which of the valve plates I need to get from Alika........

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2186917

And his fiber shims ......

https://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=2136289

I'm almost getting excited about this project now.

Watching closely as I'll be having to do this and it will be my first time. Please post frequently and detailed(ly). Laughing .... The way your posts are I wouldn't be surprised if it becomes the premier Automatic Transaction Rebuild Step-by-Step!

Idk if an auto rebuild needs specialized tools like the manual and if it does, I would be open to contributing to such tools with the intention of having them to share within our community.

Well crap Crap CRAP!!

Years ago I pulled the Servo Assembly for the 2nd gear band out of this extra unit.
I used it to fix my 86 leak and delayed shift issues.

I've since moved and although I've a pile of Vanagon Stuff all packed neatly in storage boxes...... do you think that Servo is in one of them?
Ohhhhh No it is not!

Well...... there is a guy in Michigan selling used 090 parts in the classifieds, I've contacted him, hopefully he has one 🙏

How stupid can I be to have lost that Servo!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Grrrrrrrr........

Well...... off to open up the Valve Body and see which plate I need ........
I know this plate is worn, I've had it open and did the "peening" repair on the mushed hole years back.

Here is my Valve Body out of the 1986 090 transmission

Side towards transmission (up)

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Side towards oil pan (down) you can see the circle where the oil screen screws on ...... it has a tag affixed to it stamped with "FFA"

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Close up of the casting numbers .....

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

So, carefully remove all of the Phillips Head screws.
I actually didn't remove them just in case they are different lengths, I simply loosened them completely .
The lower left group of three hold on a steel disc that the accumulator seals against...... you must be careful, the disc will drop off. ......., see the disc sitting there next to the valve body?

Once loosened completely carefully lift the cover straight up and off, you will see the steel plate and lots of red oil........

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I wiped off most of the excess oil......
My plate has the extra hole.... see the squarish slot with the rectangular slot next to it? Just inside the rectangular slot is a tiny pin hole..... not every plate has this hole. The hole is darn near center of the steel plate.

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here is the photo Alika sent me to ID the hole location......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

Here I lifted off the steel plate and flipped it over ........ see the balls inside the maze of oil chambers? DO NOT LOSE THEM OR FORGET WHERE THEY GO!!

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

My fingers are pointing to A) the check balls and B the worn holes in the steel plate.......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

A close up of the holes.......

Image may have been reduced in size. Click image to view fullscreen.

I already texted Alika and advised him of my plate design.

Yes.......
Aren't you just full of happy news?

I'll see what happens.
My Ace card is that when I pull the unit currently in the Van, I'll rob the needed parts out of it.
It is a "darn near finished" part of the job.
