Have seen this before and always wondered why this open hole? It is on the right side bank side (cyl 4, 5, 6). Easy to see after removing the air cleaner housing. When the engine is running it allows a stream of cooling air to escape. It is located behind the intake plenum in the center of the photo. This is a fully stock ‘95 USA Carrera. I don’t like the fact that cooling air leaks out here. Also could be it does not matter?

I'm fairly certain that hole is to inspect the knock sensors, 1 per bank, attached to an aluminum bridge between all three cylinders on each bank.

Thanks for that. Shortly after I posted this I found out from other sources that the hole is for inspecting the knock sensor and access, just like you say.. What I am now trying to figure out if there is a plug for that hole? I would think that cooling air would be escaping with the engine running.

Bill,
I went out to check the cooling diagram, it may be the location for these:

rubber grommets

9 - 911.612.328.00
10 - 911.612.327.00

What is the specification of your car, Varioram, Non-Varioram ?

Thanks for checking! This is a non varioram induction.

Well, I doubled checked those grommets you researched and they are not for that hole. That which you listed is a double grommet with holes in the center for a wire. The mystery hole should have a solid plug to keep the cooling air from escaping. This hole is still being debated as we speak. No one has yet found the answer and Porsche keeps us in the dark as to what part [if any], should go there.

Germans being germans would never engineer and design features without a purpose. I don't find any possible part on the diagram that could be missing so, for now, I would say it is a by-product of the production process like, pilot hole or control dimensioning.

I attach the part & picture list here, you could possibly already had seen it too.

I could have questioned this, if I hadn't forgot about it , when I went to the local OPC this week... Rolling Eyes

Haha…so true. I am of German descent because my parents were from there. Came to the Seattle area after WW2. That is the reason this bothers me so. I know it’s there for the kno ck sensors but why no plug listed. Everyone you talk to and it’s the same story. Where is the part #?
