In the mean time I started a fight with driving shafts and CV joints. Funny thing is that these two axels were redone about ten years ago for a trike project. But then our government decided not to allowe self-modified vehicles to be registered any more, so they ended on a shelf after only 20 or so miles in use. Well the rubber boots on one were completely rotten, while the other one was OK.
So both were disassembled for cleaning and new grease.
Most of hardware was salvageable.
I end up with two different sets of CV. On pictures outer ones are clearly different model and/or producer. Anybody has more info please let me know.
And, for interested, this is how dead CV joint looks like:

Running with torn boot(s), grease exits, dirt gets in, yeah, that looks worn. _________________ When I set my timing, why do I flush, then take a pee? |

Good day all, rescue still goin' on.
I have found out that two CV that looked different were in fact refurbished ones. Unfortunately they were "refurbished" in such a way that I use them now for paper weight. So I sourced four good ones from my stash and clean them, dial them in and gave them a generous portion of lube.
A coat of self-eched primer and three coats of blueish grey later they look like the rest of components.
and assembled...
At this time I have rear part more or less sorted out.

As floor pan/suspension/engine job is slowly coming to an end, kindly requesting comments on my intention to make 7cm (2.7inches) body lift. I have profile with 5mm (0.2inches) wall thickness which I intend to drill and tap for body/floor screws and then weld on heating channels/body.
Will propably have to switch to rack and pinion steering... _________________ 1966 VW1300

In a 1302, the front suspension mounts to both the frame head and the body. Will you add 7 cm spacers between the top of the struts and the strut towers? _________________ 1971 Super Beetle |

Actually, spacers will have to be taller, as end was raised a bit. I will make temporary ones, and see how rake is before deciding on final height. And they'll need to be camber adjustable. _________________ 1966 VW1300

I had some time this afternoon, so it was spend finding the best route for rear fuel lines. Having experienced an engine fire before, I use copper lines wherever I can.

It is time to return to the fun staff AKA body work.
For start I made body trolley, and decided it's enough for one afternoon. 😁

Is that grease you used MDS? I think it is spelled Moly.....disulfide. It is a very rich, black grease. The only kind I know works. I have used regular wheel bearing grease before and all it did was ruin my CV joints. |

It is not going to be real baja as those are illegal here. But I am aiming in that direction. _________________ 1966 VW1300

Maybe the "dual cannon" exhaust will be a variation of this?

And regarding the front-to-back brake line, it should make the bend at the pedal assembly almost directly under the gas pedal..right now yours is too far back, your right heel will be directly on top of it. I did the same routing on mine, and realized the next day when I was looking through the Bentley manual - it's an easy fix.
|
Well pointed mistake. Today I have corrected that and it was actually more troublesome than anticipated. Problem was to bend the line in such a way not to he touched by clutch pedal.
And, of course, pedal paint was scratched. _________________ 1966 VW1300

I was pondering how I might go about "boxing" in a clutch pedal like that because I've seen them fold before. Now I just discovered that somebody is already selling them boxed in.

Started fighting with bodywork. First I had to drill all the screws holding right door as they did not want to move, even after I have welded new head on the top of old ones.
Eventually I managed to remove the door, but pillar is unusable
The hinges are frozen solid.
One corner was "carved" out of bondo
, the other corner just rotten
After hour if heating and banging one hinge moved a bit.
Now it's sprayed with penetrating oil, hopefully I will have more luck tomorrow.
Or maybe it's time to look for a better door. _________________ 1966 VW1300

Time for bodywork. Started with trolley.

Since you have to start from somewhere I started patching from passenger door pillar. It's pretty much rusted away.
Drilled out the plate holding door mounting plate.
Fixed pillar height
Marking proper position of part of pillar that positions door mounting plate
Then, cut it out
Hammer-formed new part
New part set in place
