That old oven came with the house when we bought it, it went to the garage around Y2K when we started restoring the wife’s 73 super, it has seen its fair share of parts pass through it
No worries, She makes sure they’re empty cans _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Fits in the hole anyway
Threw together a stand for the motor so I can jack it into place when the time comes
Waiting on parts for the timing belt housing before I can change the belt. And need a new rear main seal before mounting the adapter and flywheel. Need a new sensor for the crossover pipe. And most of it should be here Monday or Tuesday.
I think I will move on to brake bleeding tomorrow. _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Had to pick up a new rear main seal from the dealer, still waiting on my timing belt cover parts.
So bled the brakes yesterday, no drama there, minor leak at the master, otherwise dry
Kennedy adapter plate, flywheel and clutch done.
And a few more parts added to the motor, and pushed back in the hole out of the way

Changed out the timing belt and water pump, what was an hour job with the engine sitting on the floor, turned into a while longer because the last person to touch the water pump pulled some threads in the case. Thanks to helicoils it’s good as new. Getting close to hanging it

It’s in , the lowest point is not the oil pan
Had to hang the exhaust off to see how much space I have for the cat and muffler
You can see the o2 sensor bung falls right below the moustache bar mount

got my trailer hitch yesterday from Jeremy
pretty solid base for the bumper to hang on, and whatever accessory stuff we use the hitch for, whether it be towing, rack, basket, etc.
waiting on my tubes to get welded up for the radiator , and a new O2 bung for the header, and some muffler parts so I can get moving forward again on the mechanicals, getting close to getting it fired up

Finally working on other things inside the bus, washed it for the first time since it came home a year ago
Bought 1/4 inch and 3/8 inch Baltic birch 5’x5’ for the floor to go with the duradek floor.
Laid out some insulation
Cut the 1/4 inch bottom layer to fit all the odd border angles and holes
Then cut the 3/8” to cover it all.
Laid out the duradek and decided which way to lay it. And mark the Center line so we can get it glued 1/2 at a time
And the end result, at least until I can find a nice edge for the doorway

FFS nothing but grief from the repop electrical parts I've bought from C1P
ignition switch vwc-111-905-865 no contact on black #15 when in the ignition position
Ordered a new one from Concept1, swapped it out next day and the new one worked just fine
turn signal switch vwc-211-953-513G , the high beam switch contact isn't working
I pulled out the one that came with the bus and it works, but the stalk is rusty, and crusty, that's why i bought a replacement of course.
I haven't called C1P about this one yet
emergency flasher switch vwc-111-953-235 wrong listing for 71 bus , doesn't have the correct contacts to work
Ordered a new one from WCM and it works properly.
still need to find the proper 3 prong brake warning light, I have a later 4 contact one but it goes on when I turn the ignition on, and goes off when I push the brake. So don't know if I just have it wired wrong or what, and the little sob doesn't want to come out so I can see the terminals
getting insurance lined up today, and need to go to the DMV to see what kind of inspection it needs, it hasn't been in the system for at least a couple decades _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

had to borrow a rear bumper for the OOP inspection from a local fellow 71 westy owner, (one of three 71 westy owners in town) so we went around each others busses looking at different things we were interested in. Mine was how the roof went together and interior details, since his is all mostly original, and he was looking at all the mods I have that he wants, seats, 16" wheels, subi swap
Finally got to drive it around the other night before I took it in for the Out Of Province inspection, Wowowow it it goes
the torque is great, the bus just takes off when you step on the gas, none of that: ....well let's build up some steam..... and start moving eventually.
it easily outpaces my 65 square with the 1968cc
the OOP inspection was okay, but they failed it on a couple minor things we'll address tomorrow so I can get it in for the alignment and they can pass it
what did they fail?
missing window crank (looked all over the garage the night before couldn't find it)
windshield washer ( stupid wire pulled off the button while I was last under the dash )
alignment
brake booster (the booster one way valve was in wrong way round)
all simple fixes, and considering it has only been around the block a couple times previously. and I did a string alignment to get it roughly driving straight I think we did pretty good. And having not driven a bus since the 80's I wasn't sure on the stopping power of the brakes anymore, I didn't think they were all that bad to stop with
I asked the mechanic at VW who inspected it (also a 71 westy owner with a 1600cc) what he thought of the EJ2.5, he was pretty impressed with the power when he took it for the test drive, not so much the brakes _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Good to hear you've had a chance to drive it now. I still smile every time I drive mine. _________________ *******************************

took the bus back on Thursday after getting the new booster hooked up, and they were going to do the alignment, but they found a loose tie rod end, so they couldn't do the alignment.
So ordered parts again, and we'll try again next week
Weird thing though the battery wasn't charging, so I'll have to check to see if it's the alternator not putting out, or the battery that came out of the Subi is toast.
I've had it on the battery maintainer while its been in the garage during the swap, so it hasn't been run in the bus much, and I didn't get it load tested before we started using it.
Should we be using the Subaru sized battery, or the Bus battery? or are they the same? I never really compared them _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Either battery should start and run the engine without any issue so my guess is that it's not charging. Are you running a battery spitter unit to charge an Aux battery too?
I'm asking as I bought and installed a cheap one from Princess Auto and neither battery would charge so I disconected it and installed a 40 amp relay instead, which works well if needed. _________________ *******************************

I was just checking it, I left the battery hooked to the battery tender since yesterday, the battery was 13.2V when I took it off the charger, started the engine, and let it run 10 minuted, the reading at the alternator when running is 12.2V, and of course when I shut it off it was 12.1V at the battery _________________ http://www.thesamba.com/vw/archives/manuals/jim_martin_engine_build.php

Mine charges at around 13.3 at an idle and goes up to the mid 14s at driving rpms. _________________ *******************************
