So, being a stubborn old man a little early at 34 years old, I go out of my way to own and use vintage tools, gear, cars, what have you. Most of my stuff is affordable older stuff, cleaned up and pushed back into service, vintage craftsman in particular has been showing up all over my house lately.
Growing up I remember hunting/camping trips fondly, and nearly all of our gear was Coleman, due to being affordable and the fact that they just plain work and last. Camp fuel (white gas) powered stoves, lanterns, tent heaters, etc.
A couple years ago, before we bought our house we lived with my aunt and uncle while saving up to buy our own place, and were living very frugal- thrift or garage sales, hand me downs, etc and I did a lot of day trips fishing. While trying to find some gear to make feeding the kids rather than blowing money on fast food easier I came across two camp stoves at a neighbor's garage sale for 5$ each, and snapped them up immediately. I ended up with a Coleman 413G (seventies manufacture date, I believe) and a Sears (1967 dated) rebranded Coleman 425 ish stove. I had to replace the tank cap (~$5) on the sears, and oil the pump cup on both, but they worked with minor fiddling perfectly from then on out.
The Sears quickly became a permanent addition to the trunk of my car, and every trip had us cooking from then on out, with my son taking great joy in it overall-
On a recent camping trip we brought along the 413G, the "big" stove for the Coleman folks- as it's the physically largest one they made in this style. Little more room than the Sears, but still a little cramped, since the large burner is off to one side. Still a Joy to use, but if one were to use a bigger pot you'd have very little room to the side. Also, We tend to always have water going for tea, noodles, etc, so having one burner on reserve would be nice while cooking something else. I decided to hunt down a three burner to bring along for future trips.
Yesterday I scored a 426D (marked 6/79 on the fuel tank) locally for 40$, from a very pleasant gentleman who used it for thirty years or so until his brother passed away- they both traveled the country as photographers in a small RV and cooked all their meals on it. It was in typical used but good condition. I took it home, saw that the tank wouldn't hold pressure when pumped (it had sat for about two years, he said) so I pulled the pump assembly out, and soaked the leather cup in mineral oil for an hour or so. Put it back together and it pumped right up- and I promptly set it up to test in the backyard. Fired up and worked perfectly
Think next time we go out I'll bring this along to make some Japanese style curry (a family favorite, especially with the kids!) with rice. Gourmet kitchen innawoods time.
So, it's a bit large to fit on my luggage rack, but fits perfectly on the top of the gas tank in the trunk of my super, tucked securely in place behind the strut tower brace. Works for me!
Now, looking into this more, I wanted to get some lanterns and more gear, and cannot believe how expensive and/or collectible this old Coleman stuff has gotten In particular tents, lanterns, and the little smart accessories to go with all this stuff. I want a camp oven to go on the stove too, and those alone are their own little niche in the Coleman hobbyist circles.
Here we go with another rabbit hole of esoteric hobbies for me to get lost in _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

In our house - it's still the gear we use for the most part (my parents garage (once they have passed, hopefully not for many years to come) will burp out an amazing assortment of highly collectible "vintage" items for those who collect). _________________ Xargaret

Vintage Coleman was gathered in family car camping over many years and two generations. I kept it as earthquake preparedness equipment. It will soon be stored in my Bus for both camping and portable emergency stuff. |

My dad is a big fan of Coleman, Aladdin (for the house and cabin) and Petromax lamps - he loves the fiddly lamps. I stick with the Dietz lanterns, simple works for me. _________________ Xargaret

I love Coleman stuff - cookers and lanterns. Easy to get fuel for them. And they even have multi-fuel lanterns.
This is the way to go if you are gonna be camping.
Just make sure the parts are cool enough before sticking them in the car.
I also love Katanaboy 550 saws - this you gotta have if you are going inside deep in the woods. Got my axe too. And a machete -
i don't bother w/ the tent. Just a sleeping bag - and some tarps and ropes. |

as of a couple years ago one could still get parts. They work well. We still use the Coleman stuff we have. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

I just ordered gas cap and plunger seals from Coleman. Cheap and fast, good quality. They should last forever! |

I still use my old Coleman 425E on camping trips or when extra cooking is needed when grilling. I even use it in the garage on occasion preparing a delicious dinner dish when the smell of cooking it in the house nauseates the old-lady.
Not too many people use the old liquid gas stoves anymore, everything's propane. They can be scary to light when cold. Probably too many singed eyebrows and tent fires. I just heat the generator tube with a propane torch for a minute and it lights right up.
You can't beat the old Coleman gas stoves for heat output with flame control. My old 425E goes back to the early '70s when we bought it and it works just as good as the day it was made. |

Understandable
My uncle has an old Coleman tent heater he uses, in the older canvas tents maybe they make sense, I would not use one in the modern plastic sheet type tens that are available these days, seems sketchy.

Local Ace hardwares still stock a lot of coleman parts around here, even replacement gloves, pumps, mantles. _________________ 73 super beetle thread http://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=649622 Back on the Road!

I have lots of Coleman gear, especially stoves. Folks don’t want the white gas models, too scary for the snowflakes. Someone told me the Boy Scouts have banned them. Mine can use gas or propane, you can get the LP adapter at Walmart.
I buy units all the time, repair them, and resell them. Spray paint makes even an abused stove look new, and Walmart Stocks the colors. I find new generators at dollar stores and buy all they have in stock.
Great fun to use them too. I cook better meals camping then most friends get in restaurants! _________________ ________________________________________

One of the sailboats I used to race on had a fiddly alcohol stove that you had to pool the fuel - I set the curtains on fire with that one, we changed it out soon after. _________________ Xargaret

It's not Scouting that bans them, but many individual campgrounds have. |

They are not banned and the fuel is still available. Some parks have regulations on ANY stove with an open flame, others allow open flames only a couple hours a day at meal times. Same for microwaves that run off generators. We ran into it in Yosemite when a ranger came by a couple years ago and told us we were cooking a meal too late in the morning on an open flame. _________________ "Most people don't know what they're doing, and a lot of them are really good at it." - George Carlin |

Interesting that campgrounds ban gas stoves. Can only imagine their policy towards campfires! I personally dislike the campfire-in-a-can with fake logs, burning propane.
Here’s a discussion on “best” camp stoves:

Cool stoves! Brings back all kinds of memories of my friends failing to light theirs due to non existent maintenance, then eating cold hot dogs haha. Heres a neat thing I found a few weeks ago. We were cleaning out a shed at work and this thing was in there, still full of fuel which promptly spilled everywhere. Was told to throw it out but I couldnt resist, which turned out to be a good thing as apparently these are sort of rare.
