Finally visited the Panel Shop to see the little car in (almost) one piece and painted.
Very, very happy.
Was hoping to fit the new wheels so it would look the part at the trimmers but time beat us.
Off from Sasha's panel shop to Adrian's Trimming shop late this week. |

Had to buy a set of 54 seats (long story) Very lucky to even get them.
Took them and my original door cards to Adrian's shop a few weeks ago.
Adrian has reconditioned them beautifully even before receiving the car.

Car is off to Adrian's trimming shop shortly.
I wanted the old wheels gone before arriving at Adrian's spotless shop.
Way too high but big improvement. I will set the height once everything is fitted and back in my garage. |

Fantastic to see another Australian '54 Oval.
Do you know the MKA number for it?
There's a thread here:
https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=...mp;start=0
Where there some other early Australian Ovals with MKA numbers including my '54. |

Nearly there.
I have been fitting the small things over the last few weeks.
Fitted the semaphores and changed the bulbs to flashers, fitted running boards, fitted interior light, swapped the 6V armature for 12 in the wiper motor, extended the headlight wiring and fitted the Rossi headlights (I bought aftermarket headlights that are unusable so will look out for good genuine lights in future), gutted the terrible K.N. heart bulbholders and fitted led's that could fit inside housing, ground the woeful glass non fitting heart lenses to allow holding screw to fit, fitted license plate light and housing, fitted fender beading, replaced faulty brake pressure switch, replaced bearing cover with flogged out speedo drive, wired horn, fitted front and rear bumpers, tried to fit aftermarket bumper overiders (protectors) to no avail - do not fit, replaced broken heater cable, heater knob and heater box control levers, cut down and fitted rear engine tin, made and fitted auxiliary bonnet (hood) release cable, replaced fuel reserve tap.
All small things that add up to a lot more time than planned.
The time and money wasted on disgustingly bad reproduction items/parts has been immense. Have a growing pile of expensive junk.
One of the best things purchased was a brand new wiring harness from Vinwire in Melbourne, has made the electrics super easy and fun.
Doors to build which includes modifying the quarter vent window posts from plus '55 to pre '55 then off for roadworthy certificate.

Beautiful car!
Curious though, did you go with the dual pea shooters to allow a different engine or is that how Aussie cars were in 1954? |

Is that Iceland Green paint? |
Sure is Dan. It is the original colour.
The panel beater/painter, Sasha, asked me years ago what colour did I want to paint the car as there was no original paint anywhere after the body work.
I have never been a fan of non original colours on a car and also really liked Iceland green, _________________ Member # 145244

Thanks Jimmy, have to say everything to finish it off has been a challenge mainly due to shithouse quality reproduction parts.
I think when it is over I will share what I have learned for those who may follow.

Great question Nancy. The beater/painter discussed this with me and we decided to go with this to suit the 1600. As he said if I ever fit the original engine (which I have and I might) he can change it back.
The old panel had been butchered to take the pea shooters so had to be changed one way or the other.
BTW I am about to build my doors and have studied your Ribbed Door Tutorial microscopically. Thanks heaps for producing it.
Regards,
Mark. _________________ Member # 145244 |
