I got to check out your bus at OCTO. I'm glad you were able to bring it out.

Thank you sir. Glad that you were able to check it out and it was worth the trip out. Lots (and lots) of work ahead but I was able to connect with new and old friends again and really enjoyed the day. |

I was messing with the bus a little today and noticed something. I always thought that the yellow on the bus was a respray at some time because there are other areas which have been painted. However, today I saw that the yellow is beneath the brown. As I looked further it is also the base coat beneath the beige. The birth certificate indicates BR/BG. Does anyone have thoughts as to why the whole bus would have been painted yellow beneath the original colors?

I suspect if you did some gentle exploratory paint stripping around the bus you would find the original brown/beige paint.
in the upper right area of the above photo ^ it looks to me like there is brown showing through from underneath the yellow. There is also an angular (from 4:30 to 10:30) wear spot that looks like the brown is underneath as well as the light beige under the brown.
If I had to make a guess from 1200 miles away, I'd say the bus was painted yellow over the original colors, and then painted the original colors again.
My '52 kombi (which was next to yours at octo) was dove blue originally, then bright red all over, then an ivory color, then red oxide primer, then dove blue again (current top coat thats wearing off). _________________ drive your split. |

Hey Jake, I appreciate the thoughts. I will do that but consider this. On the right side nose that follows the V, you can see what would have been factory pinstriping. That portion of brown is over the yellow. Would they have gone to such lengths to paint it a second time just like it came from the factory? Let me know what your crystal ball says. 😂 |

Sadly I do not have a crystal ball!! That being said, I do know that Volkswagen was extremely organized and consistent with their vehicle production. They wouldn’t have used yellow primer on one bus when not on any others. It’s possible the birth certificate is wrong and the bus was in fact delivered in primer and then painted yellow? And then brown/brown later in life?
Do some stripping and report back _________________ drive your split. |
