This just started happening, a quiet but distinct rumbling sound when driving, even in neutral and coasting, engine off. So I am thinking wheel bearings? Car has only 83,000 miles on it.

Probably. Try turning left and right at speed. The noise may get louder when you do this. This is because one bearing will be loaded more than the other.

I go thru bearings quite often. Probably 40-50k

STOP DRIVING IT! . Check your lug bolts!!!

Wheel bearings tend to make low humming to a growl noise before they get to the “rumbling” stage, if it has progressed quickly, it is usually loose lug nuts/bolts.
