In the process of re-coloring the yellowed interior panels in my 2002 Winnebago camper. While they are out, I'm adding some Dynamat to the inside of the van's shell (i.e. exterior metal).
I'd also like to fit the empty cavities that are left between the exterior metal and the Winnebago interior panels, for added sound and heat insulation. It's obvious that the van could use some insulation here -- when sleeping on the bottom bunk on a cold night (my partner and I sleep together and I’m usually against the window) you can definitely feel the cold coming through easily.
Any suggestions on the best material ... fiber insulation? Wool or Cotton batting? Foam Rubber? Something that's made specifically for this application?
I could get creative but would prefer to follow anyone else who's been down this road before ... Thanks!
These photos show the open cavities in the body that I'd like to fill in. Preferably with material that I don't have to use an adhesive for.

I’ve got enough havelock wool at my house for you to do your van, crutch. Shoot me a text and we’ll figure something out in the next week- it’ll be free. We’re staying at an airbnb still pending Helene repairs, but will be at house basically every day at some point. _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. Wow, that's an awesome offer mikemtnbike, way to go! Best wishes to you all after such a devastating disaster.
I'm not trying to be a bu**, but since this post is about insulation. I researched the various options when I redid my interior. In the end, I chose thinsulate specifically for its resistance to moisture. Condensation is something I have been trying to solve for all my van and tear drop camping time and was a key consideration for thinsulate.
Another key thing for us is insulating the windows. A lot of condensation happens on the windows, and then drips into spaces unseen.
BTW, the only solution I have been able to find that works reliably to prevent condensation, heat. A diesel heater for me or I assume for you EVC owners the propane furnace. |

Thanks for the kind words bigfoot!
My mom is a pretty renowned fiber artist. As a kid, I competed in sheep shearing contests and kind of know this very nerdy and niche topic.
Few if any human-made materials can match the moisture wicking properties of wool. Thinsulate is awesome, but I think it's main advantage over wool is being less bulky.
As long as the havelock is not compressed, I feel very confident with its ability to move moisture.
Agree that dry, vented heat is awesome! _________________ 1991 Vanagon GL 2.1 AT Westfauxlia. "Frankie" Totaled https://www.thesamba.com/vw/forum/viewtopic.php?t=764510&highlight=carnage
