Thank you everyone. This is definitely a fun project Bus. Lots of originality. It’s a shame half of the interior is missing. Here are pictures of the interior cab divider curtains. Don’t know if they are original or replacements. If they’re replacements, they would’ve have been done sometime in the 1960’s or early 1970’s seeing that this Bus was parked 45 plus years ago. Pretty cool design if you ask me. Wonder where they came from? Wonder if this fabric design is still around?

Ace bus…the stuff of dreams.
Can you post up pictures of the underside? & under the front arches?
Interested to see how solid the bus is.

Would be cool to just roll it as is…curtains and all.

I may have been spoiled with the somewhat dry West Coast Buses that I’ve been surrounded with. This Westy has a bit more rust than I’m used to in the past. Interesting how nice the battery try is. The paint will need some touch up in places. I am guessing that the water froze and melted slowly over the years to make the rust rings in certain spots of the exterior. For now, I think I’ll roll it as is and work on the rust repairs down the road. The goal is to have this Bus running and driving by spring 2022.

Seen same on buses with little to no ice and snow climate areas. It is just how rust works its way under the paint and in a way crowbars that much of the paint. Then again, again and again....

This stuff is probably rust/mud/salt getting packed in there and rusting it out from the inside.
I've seen that before on the jack points and outriggers, even on Buses that were pretty solid otherwise.

Better get it on the long term list if you know what I mean. Surprisingly a lot of the upper rust has not punched through but it won’t be long, and then you’ll have a whole new set of problems to deal with.
When the paint stops doing it’s job you have two choices, let the bus slowly return to the earth or fix it and paint it.

Excellent Bus. How many PGSG Westy's had original safaris? In late '90's, I parted a '59 Mango Westy with original Safaris, just south of where this Bus came from, in to South Dakota.

Where does one find a square door closet?

I believe Mike M's '58 is an original safari, original 6 popout PGSG Westy

I was in the process of selling off as many projects and parts to try and buy this bus, but once the price hit and exceeded what I thought was reasonable, it was over.

Anyway, really glad it's back in the rotation.

My 61 single cab that we bought out of North Dakota had a Volkswagen Sticker looked identical to this in the same place. Probably just a coincidence.

That's kinda why I assumed this westy was Canadian. I have a 60 Kombi that came from northern ND and it also has that Volkswagen sticker under the hatch.

Don't want to hijack this thread - Congrats on owning this bus, looking forward to seeing it back in action!

My Palm Green Sand Green Westfalia is definitely a Midwest USA Bus. I wonder what dealerships were using the “Volkswagen” water decal stickers back then?

Finally got my Certificate of Authenticity back from Germany. Definitely not a Canadian Bus like most have thought. My PGSG Westfalia was delivered new to the VW Distributor in Chicago on May 7th 1958. I am guessing that M-code M375 makes it a factory Westfalia camper kit. Is that correct?

I wonder what dealership it was delivered to when new? It’s possible that it was delivered new to one of the dealerships in North Dakota seeing that there is a “Volkswagen” water decal on the rear above the engine lid. If only this old Bus could talk???

Maybe I'm wrong but I have never seen a 231 (kombi) in PGSG. Is this the reason of M544?

It does make sense seeing that this is a factory Westfalia. They wouldn’t want to order a 221 Microbus model and have to remove the middle seat, rear seat, and Standard Microbus interior trim at Westfalia. They would’ve been better off with a stripped down Kombi being sent to Westfalia Werks.

Westfalias were based on kombis, but pgsg is a microbus colour. So that 544 denotes a kombi painted pgsg which mostly likely means it was headed to westfalia. The 375 is a standard north american option package with popouts and safaris..

Decided to cut open the rear seat cushions that came with the Westy. Underneath was much older Green quality material with nicely done stitching. I wonder if this is the original material for this Bus? The Wedge pillows are there also. The foam inserts have turned to dust. Thoughts???

I think the cushions and curtains are original to the bus. The stitching and installation look factory westfalia. I expect there will be naysayers however I am positive I have seen both of those patterns in the past, and I really only geek out on early westy stuff. I personally would preserve/re-use the cushion material and look at options for re-creating the curtains.

What a nice bus, congratualtions! I love the colours, it's orginality and all the Westfalia parts that are still there. Amazing that the body is still looking this good after being outside for decades.
And yes, it would be very nice to see what a good CLR treatment and a careful polish would do for the original paint!
