Hi guys, first time post here.

Just bought a 1973 Thing in pretty nice shape, but as always I'd like it to have a little more power. It is bone stock drivetrain wise, and I have a 1919cc dual carb setup in my basement that I am thinking of putting in, but it is out of a 69 beetle. I believe this is a direct bolt up, but I am unable to find any info on if the freeway flyer trans that is currently in my 69 bug would be able to be bolted into the Thing.

The most info I've been able to gather is that the nose cone may be different, are these interchangeable?

Thing trans has a different front mount. You could swap that over (nose cone). Things use different cvs. Larger in diameter and better articulation than Type 1. You would have to swap the output flanges on the trans.

Question is, why? Your '69 Type 1 "freeway flier", was built to exactly what spec? ( RP / 4th ) It could be a 4.12 / .82 (Thing is 4.12 / .93) OR 3.88 / .89 or .82. Remember, you don't want the rpms too low at cruise speed as you will have a slow car that overheats.

What size rear tire do you plan on using?
Do you know for certain that the Thing transmission is 100% stock?
Spend some time here. https://weddleindustries.com/gear-calculator

I would leave the transmission alone for now and just swap in your 1915.

I also want to ad that your Thing should have an AV code transmission. It should be a single side cover ( SSC / Z-rib / zig-zag ) case. It is arguably the strongest transmission case. Highly desirable. If you were to do anything in regards to the transmission it should be to have the AV rebuilt to suit your needs.

Welcome to The Samba.

You don't have to change the nose cone. They make adaptor mounts for the swap. You will need to swap the CV flanges. Bug use 90mm CV joints and the Thing uses 100 CV joints. You will also need to match the pressure plate with the T/O bearing.

More info to read and learn.
