I have had windows and mac, but I always return to window. I have had the same laptop for about 5 years now. I got a really good deal off best buy open box. I paid about $400 at the time.

Set filters for $250-$749 can get some pretty good i3-i7. Somehow my laptop is still alive, but this is definitely the route I will go when I need to replace it. |

Mac vs PC. This will go on forever. We were PC from the beginning of the digital age until 2012. We had 3 PC laptops catastrophically fail within 5 years. We switched to Mac for hardware reliability. Change was challenging but our MacBook has been smooth for the past 5 years. We are now a MacBook/iPad/iPhone family and happy.
Apple products are pricey but in our opinion worth it.
That said, the prices on Chromebooks and other PC laptops are very reasonable. _________________ Larry in OB

95% of our computing is now done on the ipad. Our 5-year-old mac is still adequate for stuff that the ipad can't do, like record TV shows, serve music and video to the rest of the house, and run backups on the ipads. We don't keep much stuff in "the cloud."
We had both macs and windows at home until a few years ago when we retired the last windows machine. I still need to use windows when I go to the museum, but we are all Apple at home. _________________ Brian

I was windows, but now use a MacBook. The reliability and ability to use literally forever is great. My dad is had his Mac for 10 years and it still works. Not as many viruses either. I like that I can use my Mac with my iPhone and vice versa. They are pricey though... _________________ '67 Beetle L41

I just replaced my fourteen year old HP desktop with a brand new HP desktop, primarily due to not being able to run newer software, it was otherwise still running decently well. Ironically enough, the new one cost less than what I paid originally for the old one. _________________ 1960 Ragtop w/Semaphores "Inga" |

When I was younger and wanted to tinker with HW and SW, I bought Windows machines. Also, that what was in use at work, and I took work home a lot. About 10 years ago the reliability of both HW and SW began to give me doubts, and I wanted it to WORK, not work on it.
Then Windows started this periodic hardware checking routine, and if you replaced too many components, you had to re-validate Windows. I added a second hard drive and replaced the video card, and pop, no more Windows. The automatic revalidation failed, the manual didn't work (even tough I had the original DVDs with the software!), and Microsoft's answer was to buy windows again. F that.
The kicker was my disgust with HP who advertised their PCs as "industry standard PC" but that was a lie. Their hard drives had microcode somewhere that the motherboard checked for. When my drive broke, HP wanted $600 for a drive otherwise identical at Best Buy for $100.
I figured if I was going to pay Apple prices then I'd have the benefits of Apple, too, and bought a mac (large screen desktop). It has crashed only twice in 6 years and still takes the latest software.
I have a MacBook that is about the same age, and it's still working fine.
I'm never looking back.

I've always been a windows guy but when my last HP lap top lasted a whopping 2 years before self destructing, I said no more. This was the second lap top that barely lasted 2 years. So, I bit the bullet and got a Mac laptop. I was also tired of all the virus and other junk the windows platform seemed to pick up despite having loaded anti-virus software.

I have used Apple computers at home since 1983 and Windows machines on an off during the course of my working life. At one point I even sold Apple products in the days before the Apple Stores.
I definitely prefer the mac environment and agree with previous comments about reliability and longevity. Over time they are cheaper to own than Windows equivalents.
However I do feel compelled to mention that in the last few years the gap has narrowed. The problem, as I see it, is now that software can be updated constantly via the internet, it is now more buggy than ever.
It used to be that any given Apple hardware/software combo would be pretty much rock solid and by the time a new version was released on disc all the problems would be worked out and it would be very backwards and forwards compatible.
Now software, web browsers and so on are upgraded on the fly via downloads or instantly via click-throughs and the user basically becomes a guinea pig for the latest version. I find that Apple isn't as concerned about protecting legacy systems as it used to be and is forcing users to upgrade hardware at a faster pace than previously. I guess they learned something from iPhone sales!
At home we have a 2006 white macbook and a 2011 mac mini. Pretty old machines to be fair but both machines run their productivity apps just as well as they day they were new. However the macbook is completely useless for watching video and next-to-useless for browsing the web. It can't keep up with the new video codecs and the webpages of today are filled with so many memory-hogging ads and clips that it just hangs up. The mac mini is nearly there too. A few years ago I switched to Firefox which bought us some time but I can't upgrade any further now.
To top it off Apple no longer supports older software like iPhoto. I used to make iPhoto albums every year but they will no longer make them. You have to upgrade to the new Photos software and still may need to redo your old albums. Neither of our machines can be upgraded to the new OS and Photos so basically I have to buy a new computer if I want to reprint any of my old albums ( and make future ones).
Once I upgrade the hardware I can completely kiss goodbye my last versions of Photoshop and Final Cut Pro. These were legit retail versions from my days of Apple sales and I'm not interested in the Adobe subscription plan.
So while it will be nice to have a newer, faster machine, I'll be giving up a lot just to browse the web faster, watch video clips without stuttering and be able to reprint some old photo albums. _________________ 89 Syncro GL Westfalia 2.1 WBX/WBXaustSS

For a desktop computer I use windows as do the majority of other folks. If you know Linux might I ask why you are asking? Usually those who know Linux build or know their machine inside and out. Also, Apple is BSD (FreeBSD) based which is a cousin of Linux as is Unix. It is the only reason I ever considered getting one but the cost is too prohibitive.
Dell has treated me and many clients very well. _________________ www.vwnos.com [email protected]

I have had a similar experience. I have gone through a half dozen windows laptops, they last about 2 years. I need windows for the work I do, but I am considering an Apple for all the surfing and BS I do in my off time. |

My last 2 Dell Latitudes have lasted well over 7 years each. Both my kids got new Latitudes when they went to college. They both lasted well past them graduating. _________________ Glenn

I've been typing all my posts here for the last 5 years on an HP (of course Windows based) laptop. Never a single a problem with this machine except the battery life is starting shorten to about 3 hours.
I find that each note, blurb and message I add seams to have extra credibility and frankly, sex appeal because of it. _________________
