I had a local machine shop do some machine work and put together the bottom end. They put the rods in upside down on one side, took it back and they fixed that. The engine had more resistance to turn as it should, I split the case and found this. I am going to go ahead and put it back together as I cannot trust them with it. My question is: can I spin this around and still use it, or has the dowel smashing into this area ruined the bearing? $1200 to do a valve job and bottom end work, and I get this malpractice.
Engine only turned by hand, not started. I thought initially it might have been incorrect end play, not. Kept taking it apart until I found this.

Probably is it still loose on the crank? That little #4 bearing is never a problem they never look worn even after many miles. But if in doubt I think Air Cooled Net sells single bearings. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Its loose on the crank now. If you look that would have been a thin spot that the dowel could have pushed in on. I guess I see what size it is and buy a new one so I don't have to worry about it later. _________________ 1968 Beetle (storage)

Were it mine, I'd 100% tear-down & flat start over.
They've already F'd up on 3 components, so there's just no telling what else this butcher shop has done improperly. Rant off, & G' luck. _________________

I'm not sure how compression works.
Turbos don't produce torque, they produce HP. Instead of torque.
The real problem with NA engines is you don't hear the nice whine of the turbo as it spools up.
Before I commit, I'm going to do more research because I don't really know what piston rings are. |

I suppose you could pull it and feel it but even if it's high in that spot it's just not going to cause a problem on that bearing. But if the dowel pin was setting there instead of in it's hole then the end-play is likely not set right. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

Put it back together as you found it and take it to a VW shop and have them document what they found wrong and have them fix it then take the moron that did the work to small claims court and sue for your money back. Its real easy and when he loses and doesn't pay you, you put a lean on his business and he wont be able to buy supplies as he will have zero credit till he pays the lean. |

It's probably still just fine. File down the high spots. The #4 main bearing rarely, very rarely causes trouble.
As usual, make sure it's tiny oil hole lines up, and blow out the oil passage thoroughly, because there is an oil restrictor in there, and if it gets too much dirt stuck in that restrictor it you'll have virtually no oil flow. |
