I wired up the generator once I got my voltage regulator. It still didn't solve the heating up problem. Whenever I hook the battery up it heats even with the key switch off. Iv followed a wire diagram I found online and it agrees with every other one i have found for the generator. Only thing i can think of is i can't find the ground on the thing. I though maybe it is already grounded some how. Any suggestions? is it fried? |

Pictures of your wiring? Do you have a ground stap/cable between the transaxle on chassis? _________________ Joseph

VW has a braided strap for the ground that bolts onto the front of the transaxle and to the front trans mount to ground the trans and engine. _________________ Joseph

I'm trying to find a picture of that. so its a separate ground wire other than the one ran from the battery to my frame? |

If you have the solid state bosch voltage regulator and you have the battery backwards the isolations diodes in the voltage regulator conduct current key on or off! Not sure about Mechanical regulators. _________________ 1960 Beetle And 1679cc DP W-100 & Dual Zeniths! |

You have a dead short somewhere. Time to start tracing wires, looking for pinched wires, missing insulation etc. First thing I'd do is pull all the fuses and see that the problem persists (it must - a dead short will blow a fuse...).
I'd also disconnect wires and then touch them to their terminal to see if they spark (ie, wire is in the path of the short) _________________ 1965 Type 1 sunroof Baja / about 70k miles on self-rebuilt '74 1600 and counting / SP heads and aftermarket valve keepers / non-doghouse shroud with external cooler and filter / 1.5 qt extended sump / Weber 32/36 DFAV progressive carb / 009 dist with Pertronix / 1.25 ratio rockers and ball adjusters / 1.5" stainless steel J-pipes and carbon steel baja exhaust |

Thanks guys I'll take a look. And Dale see the green wire going to back of the generator in your picture. Isn't that a ground? I can't find the ground on my generator. |

Yep... Its a ground.... If regulator is mounted on chassis or engine shroud, it probably is well grounded and wired ground is probably not needed, BUT if you are insecure about it, run that ground... IF you are mounting regulator on fiberglass dune buggy body by all means run the ground, you WILL NEED IT in that application...
