Hello,

73 Westy
1700cc Single Carb, Fuel Injected

I've been working on this project for the last two years, finally had engine rebuilt and just breaking it in. It runs at a great temperature, but my question is.....

is it normal for an air cooled engine to get hotter (to the touch) after its done running and shut off?

Im new to these and wondering if this is normal...... any advice would be appreciated! thanks everyone......

Overall the engine is going to start to cool once you turn it off, but heat may be transferred from a hot part to a cooler one as this happens, so yes some parts of the engine may heat up in the first few minutes after shutdown.

The outer edges of any of the cooling fins would be one place that will initially heat up once the engine is shut down.

thanks for the reply...... yes it seems that top part of the upper fan housing is where its transferring to..... and can take up to an hour or so to cool off.... i just wasn't sure if this was normal with air cooled engines....

Totally normal. That area is cool-ish to the touch when running since its having all fresh air flow through, but when it shuts off all that heat the cooling air is helping to dissipate is now going to heat soak the rest of the motor and rise, as heat does.
