I like the engineuity, keep in mind transaxles have many oiling problems running upside down. Main seal and vent leaks, also problems with the foward pinion bearing, it is normally submerged in oil. Just a fyi _________________ There are no stupid questions, only stupid people,

It would be easier to run a subie trans.
5 speeds and no work except making mounts. _________________

why would you need two transaxles back to back??
would a rear diff from a 944 work better? _________________ Never look down at anybody unless you are helping them up..

I'm going to guess the "transaxle" in the front is just an empty case with a through-shaft, and is being used as a spacer and to actuate the clutch. The transaxle in the rear will be functional, and will use a solid axle (similar to some sand-drag cars). The trike will sit low, and the engine will sit forward so that the rider is not straddling it. Or at least that's what I'd be doing if I put together that same collection of parts pictured.
Cool looking build, Snu...interested to see more details! _________________

Yes thanks.
The oiling ports are drilled and vents moved.
Input shaft seal is a bugger. Seals, but don't know for how long it will last.
Never have had a bearing problem.
I originally built this quite a few years back. So long ago that it has been a registered antique for several years. |

Yes but......
I have only seen one flat subie ever my entire life.
For some reason just not popular or common where I am.
Hard to come across unless you find one several states away on Craigslist and drive to get it. |

Would be a nice gearbox
But....
The right side up trans is just empty.
It is a drive extension to move the engine forward.
The rear trans is the gearbox and is upside-down to make it all 6 inches lower. |

Not a solid axle.
Short axle swing Narrowed 6 inches each side.

Here is an old pic.
That little 16yr old daughter is all grown and gone away now.
So i guess that makes this around 10 yrs ago.
Carbed 2110
No tins
Tall gears.
Rebuilding the whole mess now.
2387 fuel injection and distributer less.
More of a chopper look.

I like the upside down for lowering. I would use a expansion tank mounted higher for the gearlube to have aplace to go although as of yet my trans I built hasent seem to get much more then the outside temps possiably 15-20 more(by touch). so i dont know how much expansion will take place. I over filled mine a good bit, personaly i want my main shaft bearing in the oil.
I did see last year a trike with 2 trans like that & type 4 motor(engine), extreamly well done throught. he must of been a fabriacator&machinest with some engerneering too. I dont recall if the trans was upside down or not. I must of inspected it for close to an hour.(car show) most of what I see is ....crapola to put it nice. or ratrod =on steeroids exiting through hemorrhoids....if you get my drift. |

Yes i do run it deep in oil. But don't think deep enough to submerge the the bearing.
I just took it down and no percievable wear to the bearing.
Rancho didn't think of it as a problem.
They did not build but did tell me what had to be done.
I was buying parts from them, maybe that loosened some lips, but they were quite helpful.
It has normal 1 and 2
1.26 later third
.82 fourth
Nut type solid spacer splined shaft 3.44 ring and pinion
Later style syncros and shift forks/mech |

I remember CB used to bring in Brazilian-made mainshafts and 3rd gears in very tall ratios. They weren't very good quality, but worked pretty good for trikes (and they were real cheap). _________________ aka Pablo, Geary

I would have liked taller 1 and 2
But the 3.44 r&p did make it pull a few seconds longer.
Started with a 3.88 r&p and at this weight it physically took longer to shift it than it took to pull the gear.
The 3.44 is a lot more drivable but still pulls the gears so quick that there is no reason to remove hand from shifter untill in top gear. That is unless you must get a hand back on the bars to get it pointed back the right way or need something to hang on too. It takes quite a bit of pucker of the backside to get enough suction to stay with the seat.
I hope the larger engine don't leave me wanting more gear. |

At one time I wanted to get a 3.10/1.93 mainshaft, but raising second causes it to run into the reverse gear so you have to use a 091 reverse and after learning all that, and pricing it out, it seems less of a good idea.
Way cool!
How'd you get the idea to build it in the first place?
I have seen a few similar built, but yours must have been one of the first ever. |

This is Swedish style.
Not common here.
Not pure swedish, has some American hot rod and some chopper in it also.
And thanks for the trans info.
I am not changing gear ratios at this time.
I could see going up on r&p and back down on 3 and 4.
But gonna ride it and see first.
Got a little more done.
