Hello. I have a 1971 standard bug with 2.5 drop spindles in the front, stock beam. I am getting ready to purchase tires but need to know what size so I dont rub the fender lip. Currently it has 165/80 R15 on it Right now and it rubs the fender lip.. What do u recommend. Thx. |

Take your width times .03937, multiply it by the aspect ratio, multiply that times two and add it to the rim width to get the diameter. Once you have the diameter and width, you should be able to figure out where you need to go from where you're at.
For example...
165mm times .03937 = 6.49605" x 80% = 5.1968" x 2 = 10.39368" + 15" = 25.39368"
Your current tires are 6.49605" wide at their widest and 25.39638" in diameter.
If you want to drop the diameter or width, you can use that formula in reverse once you figure out what you need to clear the fender.
You could pull the tire away from the fender by dropping the width and a little diameter with something like a 145R-15 like these http://www.thesamba.com/vw/classifieds/detail.php?id=1918509
Or you could keep the width and drop the diameter a bunch with something like this

Personally, I'd go with the 145's. Just getting the fender to clear is one thing, but making it look right is something completely different. |

Something like this. If you're running stock rims, the tire will sit inboard even farther than this.

Its not really your tires causing your problem...drop spindles increase your front wheels track width between 1/4 to 1/2 in total...thats why people narrow there beam...im about to lower my 65...last time i lowered a bug was 1987...so ive been reading and learning !!! |
