|
|
First one. I'm replacing the front defrost vents on top of the dash, does the windshield have to be removed? I have the old ones out but the new ones just don't want to go in.
Second question. The car takes off fine and goes through all gears with no problem if not giving it a lot of gas. If I'm in third or fourth and say pressing three fourths of the way down on the gas the engine RPM rises but the car does not speed up. It's like being in neutral. This car sat for 20 some years, could the clutch be the problem? |

This is the textbook symptom of a slipping clutch.
There are a few things that can cause it. The first (and easiest) thing you should check is to make sure your clutch pedal free play is adjusted correctly. If it's not, it's possible that the clutch is not fully engaging and can slip.
To adjust, you turn the wing nut on the clutch end of the clutch cable until the pedal has about 1" of free play.
If adjusting the free play doesn't solve the problem, then the engine has to come out.
Either the clutch disc is simply worn out or the clutch disc and/or flywheel has become fouled with oil due to an oil leak, either from the front main seal on the engine or from the input shaft seal in the transmission. _________________ 1965 Volkswagen 1500 Variant S

I thought the clutch might be slipping, thanks for the conformation.
I'm still wondering about the defrost vents on the windshield. The levers that moved the flapper was broken on the drivers vent so I bought two new ones, figured I would replace them both. They were a pain to get out. the new ones don't want to slide in, I even put some lube on the dash so they would slide better, still won't go in. The glass gasket seems to be the problem, so does it have to come out so the vents can drop in? Thanks for the help. |

With clutch slippage, I'd recommend NEW pressure plate, new disc, and either new flywheel or get existing one re-machined.
And get new release bearing, "just because". _________________ 1970 VW (owned since 1972) and 1971 VW Convertible (owned since 1976), second owner of each. No, you shouldn't have to remove the windshield. I can't remember if the dash pad has to come out, but I'm sure it would make the job a lot easier, either way. It might help to remove the ducts that are behind the dash inside the trunk, too. They come out pretty easy, in fact, with the vents removed, there's not much else that holds them in place. _________________ "It's time you started treating people as individuals, rather than mathematically predictable members of an aggregate set, regardless of how well that works." |

Sounds like you need to change the clutch.
It may be adjustment but after slippage you get heat glazing that makes it slip more, and if left to long you can cause enough heat to warp the flywheel. |
