Did you happen to leave off the clutch throwout bearing and the fingers of the clutch arm are rubbing on the spinning clutch? I lost a bearing in a 1968 once and the clutch arm hit the spinning clutch and totaled the whole deal.
Wait ,I just listened to that again. Do you have straight cut cam gears in that?

There is a T/O bearing installed and no straight cut gears, just regular ol' aluminum helical.

The slinger will lock up the crank if in backwards- that pulley usually takes one or two thick spacers- check between the pulley and the tin work for shavings - or remove the pulley and replace it with a stock one- inspect for rubbing.

Reverting back to old photos so I don't second guess myself Twisted Evil

The slinger appears to be installed the correct way? Concave facing out?

That is correct. All looks pretty normal in there.
Take off the front pulley and run it.

I have the CB spin on filter pump, and the cover pushed the tin behind the pulley out just enough to lightly rub it.Squealed loud.Scared the shit out of me first time I fired it.
