Great idea especially now knowing that everything you buy now days is crap and not made to last like in the good old days. Seriously, plumbing is simple. Who decided they needed to redesign how a house faucet works?
Rhetorical.

So I was sitting around thinking ......... Do you remember when guys had better things to do than complain about things? I guess it’s as old as time, they’ve always been commiserating about life. Case in point the movie
Grumpy old men and it was quite popular. Very Happy

Of all the people to go back & dig this topic back up Think

More often than not it is good to see where you’ve been to know just where you are going. I reread it all and admit I’ve picked some good information reading your thoughts, thanks guys.

Remember when you could diagnose a problem, go to your VW dealership and get the parts you need and put them in?

A couple years back the Jetta we had just bought flagged on engine light. Called the dealer- oil level is good can it be driven? "Yes but bring it in right away!" 2.5 hour drive, 10 minutes in the shop "It has a bad glow plug."
"Replace it please."
"That part number is no longer available, it's been updated."
"Ok, put in the new one then."
"Won't work. The ECU will see a miss match and flag an error.
"Put in 4 new ones then."
"None in stock."
"Order 4 and call when they come in."
"Ok"
"Thank you."
2 weeks later - "Your parts are in Sir."
Sent the wife to get them. "Sorry they have been back ordered."
Another 2 weeks goes by, called them - "yes your parts are in Sir."
This time they were there!

So - 1 month, 13.5 hours driving on 3 different days the glow plug that I didn't need in the summer was taken care of!! Rolling Eyes

A $20 code reader gets the code, and you order the parts from VW online, then have a local indie put them in.

Is the vw obd11? My 7.3 ford isn't, OBD11 readers won't connect to it. I have to use my kid's $4500 snap on scanner.

https://www.riffraffdiesel.com/autoenginuity-total-ford-enhanced-bundle/
This is what I was going to buy if I had kept my 1996 7.3 Powerstroke Ford
Tag on truck said it was OBDII ready, it is not.
The scan tools you can buy for reasonable prices do not work. The one from RiffRaff Diesel is the one that was recommended by others to get.

On the fte forum they keep throwing around forscan for andriod with a plug in bluetooth adapter. You can download forscan lite for free to see if compatible with your device. Gonna buy the adapter, under $75, and give it a try. Might come in handy if it breaks down 1000 miles away from home again.
