I remember when kids were more afraid of their dads than the cops. And also when the cops would watch dad knock the kid around for being a dumbass being brought home by the cops.

Remember when the teachers could discipline the students (or worse yet the gym teacher or shop teacher) & then had to deal with mom when you got home & the dad when he got home?

The same thing has happened with trucks. Nobody offers a "small" truck in the US market, and the full size trucks are absolutely huge. I drive a 77 Chevy heavy half with a big flatbed and lumber rack that is owned by my boss. Parked next to a newer offering from the big three, it looks almost diminutive.

Not just the US market. I'm trying to find a replacement for my 1 owner '96 Tacoma 4x4. The new ones are huge in comparison. I think it's all the safety & electrical equipment. They have to put it somewhere. The Ol' Lady has an '07 Tacoma and I hate it. "A" pillars are massive with huge blind spots. Just too big. A Toyota 4x4 should have a tiny little back window, and 2 sticks on the floor.

Yeah, I guess I should have said the "domestic market" or something like that. There still seem to be small truck offerings in other parts of the world, just not North America.

I understand the need to fulfill EPA and crash test requirements, but jat what point do consumers actually get what they want?

I guess I'll keep driving my rusty 87 2wd Toyota with 244K. Nothing safe about it. Just like my buses.

I had an 86 toyota truck 2 wheel drive great truck I sold to a guy named Jesus. Bought a 99 toyota then a 2000 then three 2006s one base model one prerunner and an x runner.Unlike you I really like the newer trucks they just keep getting better. I looked at a 2016 toyota but won't buy anything till its 5-7 years old, somebody else can take the new car hit.

As if hitting and "knocking the kid around" solved problems. I remember one kid after getting knocked around got a gun and blew off someone's head, this solved the problem or did it? An eye for an eye until the whole world is blind.

I don't necessarily dislike them, I just don't have a need to drive something that big. Wish they still offered something the size of the mid 90's Tacoma.

Get this. My dad was a cop. 27 years as a Minnesota State Highway Patrolman. Also a few years on a city beat before he got accepted to rookie school.

I don't claim to have been a saint as a child, but I damn well was careful to not get caught.

I never got knocked around either, but I also never raised a hand to him. I always knew that if I ever tried, I would likely wake up picking dried blood out of my nose.

In hindsight, I had a great child hood. Never went without, but never was given something for nothing. My father is a good man.

My 22R is still running fine, but the carb is taking a shit. I am deciding on whether to spring $400 for the good Weber conversion. I just finally replaced the original radiator a month ago. Got an almost rust free long bed this fall for $150. Need to replace the front ball joints, and the leaf springs are sagging pretty bad. Not sure how far to go with this thing. I may just keep it running out of spite.

As a kid getting reprimanded, I learned to respect the teachers & grown ups. Sure one kid snaps out & does something stupid, but how many kids have grown up being disrespectful shits that are now worthless entitled assholes because they weren't taught right from wrong, those are the ones now getting shot for talking shit to the wrong thug or cop.

Exactly, everybody gets a trophy backfired too. We baby boomers tried to re-invent parenting, and every generation that has come along since has kicked us further down the wrong path.

Remember when Dr Spock reinvented parenting? How'd that work out for him?

Maybe both extremes are incorrect and the answer is somewhere in the middle. I notice both sides pointing to the others extremes and to justify themselves for being extreme to their side. Gosh, I wonder if most political arguments are that way.

I never said "knocking the kid around". A well tanned backside is hardly an extreme but is a good way to get their attention. Some kids respond to a raised voice or grounding, but others may need a bit more of a hands on approach. But all of them need to have respect for others & well defined boundaries that are enforced when they test them.

No denying that. The Ol' Lady's truck is great on the highway and I love the power, but I realized something traveling up-island in my replacement truck on the weekend. It's a '94 Toyota 4x4 22RE, and just like in my Beetles, I enjoy driving something that I have to mash my foot to the floor to get up to speed quickly. The Ol' Lady's truck, you just have to touch the pedal to get going, and flooring it is just not something you can do at all times.

And get off my lawn.

look at it like this, a 455 ho made 360hp back when, but only achieved 10+mpg, fast forward to today, new zr1 with close to 700hp gets 24+mpg, dont tell me they can not make a 140hp 2 liter get 100mpg!
