I just received a new set of seals from Kever, this time without the trim groove. I thought I would post the profile differences as it might be the last time both sets of seals are in the same place.
The first 3 are the grooves for the seals with trim
trim groove
body groove
glass groove
the next 2 are the seals without the trim slot
body groove
glass groove
It took awhile to reconcile the different profiles. But as best as I can determine, the seal for the trim piece sit on the outside of the glass different. It has taper to lay flat on the outside of the glass.
The trimless seals have a profile that kind of curves over onto the glass face, and is a profile that appeals to me very much.
And for the second time, the seals arrived supple, and fresh feeling. Rather amazing considering they are NOS 40 year olds. |

Guess I missed it somewhere, but when you say you got them from Kever, who is Kever? Bob |

I've understood the seals are brand new and not NOS. Must check if they still have the seals available as i'd like to install a vinyl roof to my Variant. I'm not going to risk cracking the windshield so i'm going to heve to cut the seal which is bit sad as the seal is in great shape _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

The seals with the groove for trim insert were most definitely NOS, and those are no longer available. The other seals are quite possibly repops, the color of the rubber and the slight difference in inside profile where it mates to the window frame supports this. As long as you don't mind doing away with your trim pieces, the new seals will work fine. |

The window seals with the groove for molding are available again.
Keverspecialist is selling them on ebay:
http://www.ebay.de/sch/ficto947/m.html?ssPageName=&_trksid=p2060353.m2748.l2654
I just ordered a set for a 2-door model.
Here's the description:
"Now again in stock
4 Piece window sealkit for 411-412 Fastback.
Better quality and fitting as Original. With grove for Aluminium molding" _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

Got my new seals last week! They look good and i can't wait to get installing them. I just have to wait 'till it's bit warmer as I'm planning on installing a vinyl roof and better head liner at the same time. _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

Hoo, this is nice: I've a spare windshield as the one in car isn't too good but I haven't even tried to swap it as I didn't have new seal.
I'll have to order a set. _________________ Kharon -- '62 typ1, '63 typ14, '61 typ21, '65 typ34, '74 412, '75 typ26

Yes....looking at these too. Are they actually NOS or new. A set of no trim groove new build seals would be worth the money. Ray |

These are not NOS. The seals are brand new and they have the groove for the original chrome molding. The Keverspecialist orders small batches of these and many other special seals for Volkswagens (especially cabriolets and other more rare models).
I ordered a set for a 2-door sedan as it was the cheapest I need a new seal for the windshield only as i'm going to have to cut the original seal if I'm gonna install a vinyl roof. I'm not gonna risk with cracking the almost brand new windshield! _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

That is GREAT to know. As soon as possible ...meaning as money arrives...I will order a set for my two door.
Though I have a pretty damn good solution for using gaskets from a late super and from type 3...so much easier to get what is correct.
also...do they have seals without the groove?...I have no use for the chrome trim. Ray |

I think they don't have the seals without the groove for trim, but it's better to ask from them. Maybe they will order grooveless seals if there is enough demand. _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

It's great to hear someone is making new seals, hoping someone starts manufacturing windshields now. Yes Ray, they have new seals without the trim groove. Very popular look elsewhere. |

Windshields are also available here in Finland. The price is around 200 euros for basic laminated glas. If the glas is tinted or equipped with the shading stripe the price is slightly higher.
Ofcourse shipping to U.S will be quite costly, but as far as i know they will ship overseas. _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

Thank you for the confirmation. Its not that I don't like the trim.....its that the trim gets damaged over the years (mostly dents). With age.....the seals with the trim slot don't do as well in very wet areas with freezijg cycles.
Also when I finish out my car.....its going to be largely dechromed. The bumpers will receive minor body work....and then get powder coated black or epoxy coated. The door handles and mirrors and rain drip line trim will get the same. The VW and 412 badges black as well. The fender gravel guards black a s well.
The only part not black will be the headlight bezels.....which I migh5 do body color or leave silver. Ray |

De-chroming is a good idea. If I buy a 2-door sedan (which i'm planning to do ) i'm probably going to make it look more like 70's GT car. So some de-chroming and satin black paint might be on the to-do list.
Unfortunately the head light bezels don't fit very bautifully on 412 models so I prefere the original silver paint. Black and body coloured paint only underline the poor fit in my opinion. And if the drooping of the bezels is not taken care of the result is even worse _________________ My cars: 1972 VW 411 Variant; 1973 VW 412 4d sedan |

Can someone tell me how to contact Kiever? I tried the email link, but I guess they don't have anything for sale now. Bob |

Ah.....I have something to help you! If you have the pot metal headlight bezels....I have a set of both the early put metal 412 bezels on my car and a spare set of the later plastic ones.......you can easily straighten that "bend" that comes over time in that top edge...ON THE METAL ONES ONLY...I HAVE NOT TRIED ANYTHING WITH THE PLASTIC ONES.....perhaps with a heat gun.. I did mine years ago.
Here is what you do:
1. Get two blocks of wood. I used 1" x 2" hardwood. One cut to length and shaped a little at the ends to fit on the inside of the top flange closer to the lamps. The other on the outside to span the whole top, overlapping the ends. The outside block of wood sits on the flat area that is normally hidden under the edge of the hood.
2. get two or three small "C"-clamps
3. start with a clamp in the middle of the blocks of wood...and tighten it against the blocks to take about 2/3 of the bow out of the bezel.
4. Apply clamps about 2.0 inches to either side of the center clamp....maybe a little more.
5 Tighten them until the the metal starts to flex. Then tighten the center clamp until everything is straight....adjust as necessary.
6. Place the whole assembly in the oven at about 275-300* F. You want it hot enough to de-stress the metal....but not hot enough to start the wood on fire.
7. At about 20 minutes.....tighten the clamps slightly. You will find they loosen a little as they expand.
Leave it in the oven for about 45 to 60 minutes. Then just turn the oven off and let it cool to room temperature.
The bezels will be perfectly straight when you remove the clamps. Ray |
