The PO had made some modifications to the Westy to get more storage room.
The fresh water tank had been removed as well as the fridge components - ie: fridge turned into an icebox.
All the parts were kept however and I got them with the bus. I debated putting the fridge back together to make it operational, but after a lot of thought and research, decided not to. I did put back the fresh water tank and will be hooking it back up. I like the convenience of having it.
For a fridge, I have a portable cooler that works on 12VDC and 120V AC on an adapter so will use that along with the icebox.
Because it is a deluxe Westy it had the wiring for a camper battery, although that too had been removed.
It is a Canadian Deluxe though, so no control panel or charger.
I bought an Optima Blue Top and installed it as the new camper battery:
I hooked up a plug so that I can plug in either my portable solar panel to charge it, or a Battery Tender when in storage.
The existing camper battery wiring should charge it via the relay when driving.
I am running a few things off the camper battery:
1. A 12VDC RV light newly installed above the rear seat:
2. A 1000 watt inverter underneath the rear seat:
Note that I also installed a second 120V AC receptacle which is connected to the shore power - piggy-backed off the 120V receptacle which faces out. That allows me to take the yellow plug from the inverter and move it to the shore power - allowing me to run 120V accessories from either the inverter when dry camping (runs off camper battery) or the shore power when plugged in.
3. On the outside of the rear seat compartment, I installed a volt meter with a momentary push button, so I can monitor the Camper Battery voltage easily but not drain it by displaying voltage all the time:
4. I ran electric wiring (using an extension cord in conduit) from the yellow plug shown above, out through the rear seat compartment, along the floor and up by the icebox to the rear of the sink:
From there, I can plug in any 120V AC accessories to run off either the inverter or shore power depending on where the yellow plug is plugged in.
I currently have a small vintage light and vintage fan:

I had a hard time finding out what heat dump pipes were. My 78 bus has them. The idea is that there is air going into the heat exchangers all the time in order to keep moisture out. So the heat is then allowed to be dumped because your not using heat in the vehicle. The pipes are used to get the heat to the back of the bus. I think they only used them in 78. |

Congrats on the bus, and nice progress!
When I was a kid we had a fan very similar to this. We called it "the lopper"! _________________ 1976 Westy

Did anyone do a pre purchase inspection on that before you pulled the trigger? _________________ Rust NEVER sleeps and stock never goes out of style.

I love my sink and water tank. Personally I would recommend it. It doesn't take much space. Also look into LED lights. They throw great light and take little power. If you have a Canadian bus you should have a BA6 heater under the belly of the bus. Any reason why you didn't run the wire under the fridge cabinet? It would be a lot more inconspicuous. _________________ 1972 VW Westy (Hit by dumptruck)

Yes, both mechanic and appraiser. The VIN was not filed off there, I'm pretty sure on mine, it only is on the Dash plate. That is what the owner's manual says. Not sure why there seems to be variation on VIN #'s. It's odd.
My owner's manual says VIN on Left Door jamb sticker and dash plate. That's it:
I don't think either of them picked up on the different front end, but they knew it had been rebuilt, and unless you are one of us Samba freaks, finding that M-Plate under the dash and decoding it is probably not SOP.
I'm satisfied that everything is legit and not stolen, and that the front end is a 77 donor front end grafted onto my 78. _________________ 1977 Westfalia - October 2015 - Current

Yes, I do have the heater which needs to be pulled and refurbed.
Just lazy on the wiring I guess. This is a working bus, so I'm not worried about being too anal about things. I just want to enjoy it |
MMMmmm BA6 - that will be a nice addition when working _________________
