Normally oil discussions would be directed to use the "official" oil thread such as this.......
Scroll down to Lubrication......

But, the Eurovan section is new, there are no FAQ,s or stickies yet for Eurovan oil.
Eurovans run an engine not seen in any other VW covered on this site.

exactly why I started this thread. It would be nice to get some of the regular forum 'stickies' up and running here for users. _________________ -------

while we're on the subject:
I'd love to have a tires sticky,
a suspension sticky,
a 'camping mods' sticky and a
'have you seen one lately' sticky along with
'good deals on nice vans' and possibly even a
good karma 'free parts' like the vanagons have.

Although I have been a Castrol GTX zealot for over 40 years in all my VWs, I run Mobil 1 in my EVC, in both engine and manual tranny.
The reading I have done leads me to the conclusion that synthetic oil is giant leap over dino oil, in all aspects of performance.
I choose Mobil 1 because Costco carries it full time. Since I do all my own changes, I can run synthetic for about the same cost as a cheap dino oil change done professionally. I buy oem filters from Europarts SD.
The car seems to run better with synthetic (which might be all in my head), and the transmission definitely shifts smoother after the change from dino. _________________ '58 Westy camper-come and gone

I'm another Rotella T6 fan. First introduced to it through the Subaru scene, it's returned positive oil analysis results for H6 and H4-turbo cars for ~100k miles. Using it in the 2002 T4, same happy oil analysis reports from Blackstone. Reasonable price by the gallon from Amazon. |

I am using Castrol Edge 5W50 year round in my 94 right now. Can get it on sale regularly at Canadian Tire for $35. No oil consumption at all.
Used Shell Rotella mineral for a while which worked very well and had no oil consumption either; just too thick for winters here. Tried Syntec 5W40 after that and the engine was noticeably rougher/buzzy and used oil as well, though very little. |

Mobil 1 in the EV, changed annually. Mine only gets about 5k per year on it, so the oil stays pretty clean _________________ .ssS! |

I have been using M1-0w40. I was actually thinking about running the 5w40 next. Weather here in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan gets cold and don't know if the 5w will be hard on the VR6.

Like the last two posters. I run Mobile 1.
Why?
Because I don't know and don't really care to know much about oil. What I do know is that many Porsches came with and recommend Mobile 1 as the factory oil.
If you dig into the research you will find that Porsche has produced some of the most reliable cars on earth. Most people don't know this because they have traditionally produced sports cars that are out of the price range for most people new. So in all the "consumer reports" type ratings they aren't classed in the "mid sized car under $20k" segments so people miss out on the ratings.
(Then of course people buy cheap abused ones used and complain when they have to catch up on maintenance and are surprised when brake pads for a performance car cost more than they did for their last civic
Anyway, Porsche has done far more research on what oil to run than I ever will. They also have a large financial risk if oils cause issues. _________________ http://www.cavevan.com |

Regarding Mobile-1
As mentioned before, I'm a Shell Rotella T6 user but... why is that you ask?
I have 4 daily drivers that I maintain which are all VW/Audi 4-cylinder turbo vehicles. In my experience, Mobile-1 seems to by consumed quicker than other oils. This is a particular issue in some of these little 4-cylinders which have a tiny fill capacity around 3.7 QTS.
I haven't tried mobile-1 in my 1993 eurovan so I couldn't say if I've noticed the same behavior; it just seemed logical to carry over with the Rotella T6. |

I use only Mobil1 5W-30 at 5,000 religiously. 03 GLS 194K miles original owners, original engine and trans. I can get the 5 qt jug at the base exchange or on Amazon prime for about $25. Motor uses very little oil during the OCI. Unless its had some hard/long runs I usually don't need to add any oil. That tells me the oil is doing a good job protecting seals and rings and gaskets. |

Amsoil European synthetic with changes every 7500
I did use mobil one for period of 30k mi, but switched back after talking to a mechanic I trust. He claimed it doesn't "Coke" as much, although I have not had any issues with that.
