They're made to order (takes ~2 weeks). |

Oh boy.
So after months of scouring the Samba, Craigslist, and eBay for '67-'71 Squarebacks and months of heavy research here on the Samba and great input from folks like Tram and Jim Adney, I finally found "the one" and pulled the trigger on Keith Park's '65 Variant.
But the car was too good to pass up and Keith restored in such a way that it can really be used and driven properly. I went up to Albany a couple weeks ago to see it in person and it's completely gorgeous - everything it was advertised to be. We've since done the document transfer via FedEx and we'll be working out a date for me to take the train up there and drive it home. |
When you go up there to pick it up, make sure you get Keith to show you his T-Bird. That thing is huge. Also get him to show you his boat. That thing is beautiful.
I think I was standing in about that same spot that pic was taken a few years ago. Unfortunately at the time, it was his golf that was parked in that spot. His boat was where the golf is in that pic. At the time we were there, he was getting ready to go to the lake for vacation.
At the time we were there, Keith had finished up replacing the right side heater channel assembly, and parked the car at his mom's house for the winter (he was done working on it for the year). _________________ Bob 65 Notch S with Sunroof

Great, thanks! Indeed they are not cheap but then again they are cheaper than my deductible and cheaper than replacing sheet metal! |

Nice purchase!
I had that bookmarked and my wife even gave me the OK to get it months ago, then I would only need a sea blue bus and fastback to complete my stock and mostly original 1965 Sea Blue VW model collection!
But it being in NY it was to far to go get it and I don't have room to keep it inside and it should not be kept outside.
That looks like a great car and a great buy.
Congratulations. |

Fastback production started in August 1965 for the '66 model year, though, and were never produced in Sea Blue, so you can cross that one off your list. _________________ Немає виправдання для війни! Я з Україною.

Just walked in the door from my journey to pick up the car. It's been a long day of travel. Took the train up to Schenectady which was of course delayed. Wound up getting there about an hour late. Luckily Keith was there to pick me up in his '71 and it was a short ride from the train station to his place.
Opened up the garage and put the new plates on and new registration sticker on the windshield:
Got all my gear packed up, fired her up and backed her out to warm up:
Had a great drive home; I took the long way to get some backroads time in before jumping on the Taconic. Only a couple minor issues presented themselves, seems to be a front wheel balance issue (or tire flat-spotting issue from sitting over the winter) which makes itself known from 50-60 mph. Gotta sort that out. Initially I also heard some noise from the left front wheel and at the first gas stop I found that the left front trim ring was pretty loose. I theorized maybe that was contributing to or causing the balance issue so I removed it. Seemed to help a little bit but there is still an issue. I removed the right front trim ring later to see if that would cure anything but no change there. I'm only mentioning this to explain why the final photo has no trim rings on the front wheels.
Gas stop, got lots of comments:
The brakes pull hard to the right if you get hard on the pedal. Gotta fix that. All the front brake hardware is new including the shoes but Keith was thinking maybe different compounds side to side or something. I'll see if I can sort it out with adjustment and if not I may try replacing the shoes.
Finally, the only working gauge lighting is the speedometer light. Fuel gauge light and clock light both are out. This should be easy enough to sort out, either a power or ground or bulb issue.
EDIT: checked in the dark garage last night and turns out the clock light is indeed working, it just wasn't dark enough outside when driving home to really see it. The fuel gauge light, however, is not working so I'll sort that out.
Here she is safe and sound in her new Brooklyn home:
The Type 3 drives great! Suspension is awesome, it handles halfway decent, and I was actually able to pass slowpokes on the road! It's a totally different driving experience than a Bus, for sure!
Definitely the best of the air-cooled VWs I've ever driven. It definitely has a more solid / upscale feel compared to the Beetle or Bus.

Oh I know what I forgot!
The horn on this car is an aftermarket 6V horn from CIP1. It is laughably weak. Like barely audible over the engine noise when the car is idling. What is the loudest 6V horn out there. This is NYC, I need a good horn! |

Congrats on getting this car- I got to see it in Litchfield CT and at the invasion last year and you won't regret buying it. Keith is pretty thorough
I'm sure he is happy that the "egg crate" stayed in NY!
Let me know if you find a louder 6v horn - I have been looking for one and have been considering LED for the taillights too - there always seems to be a young driver with his hat on backwards following me too closely

I guess that's the question, how loud is the stock horn? I mean I know we're talking a basic disc horn here but I'd like to think it would be as loud as a basic 12V disc horn, yes? I mean this horn is *really* quiet. I suppose I should test and make sure it's getting full 6V power but as well as Keith has gone through the electrical system I'm doubtful that's going to be the issue.
As far as brake lights, that's the problem with VW's pressure-based brake light switch. The brake lights don't even come on until you're on the pedal pretty hard. If you're braking lightly they won't light up.
I saw there was a guy on this site who made a switch for Beetles that activates on motion of the brake pedal rather than on brake pressure, I wonder if there's one for a Type 3 or if that one can be modified to work. |

My 12V horn is loud and resonant.....it's got a surprisingly big sound compared to my Bug's horn which sounds kind of goofy. Both are 12V though. That probably doesn't help you much.....
How about those gas station comments? I know anyone approaching me is doing so with good intentions, but I'll be damned if I'm not tired of answering the same questions over and over again. When it's your daily ride and you park on the street it's sometimes just crazy how many people want to talk.
Nice garage! Looks like an old service station. Was it? |

Sure doesn't
I did a little poking around in the parts book, looks like the original p/n for the Type 3 horn was 311 951 111A - I believe this was the one mounted in the spare tire well. For '65 they changed it to 111 951 111H when it got mounted on the bumper (which is what I have). Given the p/n, I'm assuming this is a Beetle parts bin horn. Then of course for '67 they changed it again when they went to 12V.
I was able to find an Italian-made 111 951 111H horn on Wolfsburg West so I think I'll throw that into my spare light bulb order and see how it goes.
If I ever really want to beef it up I'll have to find some vintage 6V dual fanfare horns but then I'll need to add a relay, etc which is more than I want to get into right now. I just want it loud enough to be audible.

No, it's a soulless modern condo building.
My ultimate fantasy NYC building though was always an old garage or something with a 2nd floor of office space which I could convert to living space. |

What size wrenches do I need to change the generator belt? Will want to add those to the toolkit. |

You'll want to find a thin 27mm wrench to hold the generator pulley and (IIRC) a 21mm for the nut on 6V Type 3s. The VW factory thin wrench was VW113, and they come up for sale fairly often. In some years VW supplied a Hazet 27mm wrench in the tool roll.
Beautiful 1500S -- congrats! |
You should snag one of these from ataraxia...
