Hello all, looking for some help. Recently finished Installing a completely rebuilt swingaxle and c-45 cam in my 1914 rail. Had it running but needed to repair throttle cable. Sat for a while and got all back together. Tried to start last week with no luck. Thought my fuel pump was shot so replaced pump, filter and cleaned out fuel lines and new fuel. Tried again, no luck unless I prime carb with fuel. It'll run for a very short while then quit. She'll crank all day long but only until I prime carb with fuel it'll start but not continual to run. Thoughts? Should I rebuild carb (48IDA)? Stumped. Any advice will help, thanks in advance. |

Pressure test output of fuel pump, if its good then it's a carb issue... Could be something as simple as stuck needle valve in float chamber... These ethanol fuels will much up anything....

Please don't take this the wrong way but when you put the fuel lines on the pump from the tank and to the carb did they go in the right direction, I screw up once replacing a pump and got the lines on backwards and fought it for a couple of days till I figured out my mistake.

After prolonged periods of not running my buggy, I have experienced having to crank forever, before starting. I agree that you may have a sticking float valve. I have alleviated the problem by adding an inline electric fuel pump just under the gas tank, and on a switch. I still run the mechanical pump for running, but use the electric pump to fill the bowl after it dries out from sitting, and its also there as a back up. |

Check your idle circuit screws, I assume they have these though I haven’t worked with IDA’s before. Make sure to remember the idle mix set though |

Define "sat for awhile". I would look in the float bowl for modern gas gunge. |

The test would be to pull the fuel line off the carb and see if fuel squirts out of the hose. I would pull the wire from the distributor off the coil. Don't need a fire.
The suggestion about reversing the hoses on the fuel pump is a good one. Would be the first person to do that.

Latest update. Sorry it's taken so long. Rebuilt the carb, took a bit to prime but got it running. Let sit for 2 days (life got in the way) now back to similar issue. Cranks, wants to start but still not doing so. I'm sure it's something simple but I'm just missing it. Thanks for all the help this far. Great forum guys. P.s. not the greatest at carb tuning. |
