Hi, my name is Odale,
I have a '73 Super Beetle (that has a checkered past) Crying or Very sad
I need someone to give me some more help (ideas) as to how I might fix my rear brake-drum problem.
I have done a new brake job on the 'Super'; i.e., new shoes, new springs, spreader-bar is on the e-brake correctly, adjusters are lubed with anti-seize. I was advised by a member that I had to get the adjusters to align up with the shoe bottom. "Thanks"! Still, I can't get the drum to go on. It appears that the shoes are still expanding too much. Ps., I have also installed new hold-down-springs.
HELP!!!
SOMEBODY who has had this problem please respond ASAP.
My email is <[email protected]>

Check to see if you have the adjusters in correctly, they have an arced wedge shape in the slot. If they are upside down, they will cause the shoes to ride too far out & also bind while braking.

This thinner side should be facing upwards.

Please post pictures of your new brake setup. If possible, include some closeups of where the brake shoes contact the adjusters (at bottom), the cylinder (at top), etc. With those, we might be able to spot something amiss, or otherwise help you with suggestions.

Thank you so much for responding so soon.
Odale.

Odale - I had already PM'd you with such information, and more, a couple of days ago.
