|
|
Hi everyone,
I just bought my first Ghia, a 1970 Coupe, and there is a hose coming off of the air cleaner assembly that is not attached to anything. I am assuming that it is for something smog related, but I have not been able to find in any literature where this hose should attach to. If anyone has any suggestions, that would be great!

Doesn't look exactly like my setup but one hose comes off the oil filler to the air cleaner. Another hose comes back to the air cleaner from the charcoal filter which is mounted on the engine shelf ledge by the air cleaner stand. Charcoal filter gets air from a hose from the fan to push air thru it. _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine

I do believe that's the wrong oil bath filter for
your Ghia, or at least the top is incorrect. They are
easy to swap and having many variations, someone
made a mistake installing that one on your Ghia.
I'd remove the hose, plug or pinch the fitting closed,
or repace with the correct parts. _________________ ****************************

On my '74, that hose is connected to another canister that is mounted to the chassis via a loop bracket of sorts. I can get you pictures of it if need be, however it will have to wait till morning |

I think you'll find that hose on your '74 will be plumbed into
the bottom half of your oil bath cleaner.
No hose fitting on top, eh? _________________ ****************************

Just going along with what others are saying. My 70 does not have the air cleaner in your photo - mine looks like the one in the manual. |

Here's where the plot thickens. My Ghia came from California, but may have spent time in another state, who knows. Anyway, it had the original air filter in the car when I got it, which had a hole cut at the same location as yours (it's a 69) I've connected the engine breather to it and all's well, but I'm guessing it moust have been some smog thing a previous owner had to do when the car was in Cal back in the eighties (or earlier) I nabbed a photo off the samba a couple lf years ago that also showed a 70 Ghia in Oakland that had the same mod. Although there were variations on the oil bath filter over the years, there never was a breather pipe or any other pipe at that location from the factory. The only idea I had was that maybe a PO located the breather there as when connected to it's intended location (on the intake, near the warm air flap) the oil mist condenses and dribbles out round the worn hinge for the flap (I know this because I tried putting it there!)

I think you are totally right Ant, it was probably a mod done on the cars in CA for smog. As far as I can tell, my Ghia came to CA in the early 80s, so that would totally fit in with the mod that was done on yours as well...
I will hook it up to the engine breather and see how she goes!
Many thanks everyone! |

|
|
Hi everyone
Newbie here. I purchased a 74 Ghia that was originally from California and it still has the SMOG control. Living in North Carolina, I don't need it and I would like to remove it. My 68, 71,72 Bug didn't have this and I am at a loss as to how to proceed.
Please advise and thanks

It's your car and your call but if it were me: I'd swap out (and save) the distributor for an SVDA, get a nice coil and keep the rest. There are few people on here that like the DVDA but I can't stand them. Might also take a look at the wideband thread on the performance section on how to make sure your carb is jetting properly.
The only thing on that set up that will hurt performance is the egr -- but if is working and tuned correctly it doesn't actually hurt performance. Most are broken but a working EGR isn't bad. If you do decide to remove the egr make sure you have plugged all the holes.
The can sitting on the apron takes gas vapors from the gas tank and prevents your car from smelling like gas -- unless you like gas smell leave it be. No negative impact on performance at all . . . |

I think I'd worry more about the gas filter sitting over the dizzy than the smog stuff. _________________ 70 Ghia Black convert-9/69 build date-stock w/133k 1600 SP-barn find now with a rebuilt tranny and engine
