[quote="Glenn"]For Porsche/Pedrini alloys. these are the original center cap.
Indeed. I wanted to buy a set, but they were $180. Each.
Now I have what Charley found for me: centre caps that fit, with the VW logo. Best of both worlds, and less than $180 for the set. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I've had to replace the steering coupler on my Ghia: Note that on a RHD Ghia the steering column comes out at an angle, if it is to align with the marks VW set on the beam - Before-
These are the parts to be replaced: The rubber damper and the two couplers - one fitting into the steering column, and the other one onto the shaft of the steering box.
The process involves the following steps: draining the gas/petrol from the tank; removing the tank; uncoupling the parts of the steering coupling, fitting the new, refitting the gas tank (with new hoses in necessary); lining up the steering wheel; test drive and all's well.
More detail on the "What did you do..." thread. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

This post has made my day 8 years after it was posted, at the time I didn't think anything particularly of that photo, but today rebuilding my cars front end this photo has answered many questions and eliminated a concerns.
Its amazing how much you forget that you've seen and written in 8 years, it turns our that I may have known more then than I do now. _________________ Rusty 61 RHD Karmann Ghia Coupe - Resto in progress....slowly

Don't worry I don't remember posting the picture or having ever seen it before. |
And here I am, trying to work out how it landed on my thread.
Nevertheless, it's good to see you active in your rebuild and on theSamba again, Dean. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

My wife and son are leaning on me to sell my Ghia, but I held them off by saying that I haven't finished the restoration yet. (A white lie is one that doesn't harm the "victim" and doesn't make the teller feel guilty.)
So I had to do something. I crawled under the car, making sure I had witnesses, and applied some undercoating to the floor pans.

After:
"You smell like a mechanic," my wife said when I came back into the house. I take that as a compliment. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

What a year it's been! Three stays in hospital, lots of money paid to the medical profession, one new book published, and then 19 transits through airports, 9 international flights, 12 hotels, too many trains/tubes to count, and then... 4 great rugby matches. New Zealand All Blacks vs Ireland. South African Springboks vs France. Springboks vs England, and the 2023 Rugby World Cup Final: Springboks vs All Blacks - 12-11 to the former.
Now, at last, I'm back under, in and on top of my Ghia. I had the small 34Pict Webers refurbished and will re-install them later today. I'll post all that elsewhere.
Summer here, and I hope to put some miles on my car. Maybe post some photos of a road trip. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Thanks Emil.
I took the opportunity to tidy the engine compartment while the carbs were out:
And at last the carbs are back with the linkage.
What's left is to tune them. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

That is such a clean looking engine bay, I love it. It reminded me to re-read some of your resto as well, which was time well spent.
What was your conclusion on the sound deadening socks you made for the doors? It looks like you kept them in there. I need to make some for my rear wings, but am still trying to find (a) some waxed canvas type material and (b) someone with a strong enough sewing machine to sew them! Did wrapping them in foil work to keep the moisture out? |

First, thanks for reading my almost dead thread. Now to your questions:
It made a huge difference. My wife's comment was that "our" Ghia was much more comfortable.
I kept the "socks" and installed similar sound deadening bags in the quarter-window wells and above the rear wheel wells, as well as in the large pockets on either side of the engine bay.
To ensure that water/moisture does not collect in those areas I placed a small roll of stiff plastic fencing at the bottom of each of the pockets and inside the doors. Like here:
Last, I also increased the sound-deadening under the carpets on the floor and in the rear luggage area. In short, everywhere except over the tunnel and the rockers. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Neat idea to keep the cushions away from low lying surfaces! I may well copy that. Time to redouble my efforts to find materials to make these out of. Thanks! |

I'm doing my best Darrel. Still, I'm struggling with the tuning of the refurbished carbs. I'm going to have to entice Nicholas to come over to help. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

That sounds like a good day for you two!! |
I never saw Nicholas over the festive holiday, Darrel. I think he's in Australia.
Nevertheless, after much trial and error, I got the carbs tuned. I went for a drive this afternoon and acceleration was smooth, and the car pulled well at low revs even when going uphill. Idling is at 950rpm. The weird thing is that the carbs work better than when the local VW service station had tuned them.
I posted my experience with the carb refurbishing elsewhere, but I did not mention there that one of the carbs did not get any gas and that I had to open it and clean the jets and whatever. Now everything works - touch wood.
I've had a momentous 2 years and I hope to enjoy my Ghia a lot more this year.
Al the best for 2024 for you, your Ghia and your loved ones, Darrel. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

I replaced the steering damper today. Rainy weather sabotaged my tennis so I took in hand a job I have been putting off. Another reason I put this job off was because I was told by the VW specialists in the next town (Hamilton) that it would be easier to take the gas tank out first. I couldn't see the reason for turning one job into two.
Nevertheless, I crawled under the car - after having taken the front wheels off and placing jack stands under the front beam.
The first nut came off easily - after lifting the tab securing the nut.
It was even easier on the other side.
Installing the new is equally easy. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly

Long story short:
My Ghia had a big service at the VDub Shoppe in February and was given a new WOF. And they did a full tuning, including the carbs. My car now starts at the turn of the key, idles at 850 to 900, and pulls smoothly through the range from 1000 revs to 4500.
However, they pointed out that there was a huge leak from the right side drive shaft where it meets the gearbox. I had been aware of that leak, which got progressively worse over the last year or so. That meant a warranty repair was due by the VW people who had installed the gearbox. I got the car back this week. No more leaking from there.
Here's the guilty part: Had to replace the whole assembly.
My Ghia and I are both back on the road. _________________ Festina lente - hasten slowly
